I think it varies for everyone
For example, I use my boppy still with my 12.5 month old
I hate baby socks, so footed sleepers I buy 1 pair of soft sole shoes from a wham
Here is must have 10 items-
Crib ( my kids have never coslept past 6 months well
Zippered Sleepers/gowns (so much better through the night) (14-20)
Miracle swaddle blanket (2)
Baby towel and washcloths (2)
Swing (my kids love it vs the vibrating seat)
Carrier ( I made one like the moby, for $15 I got 2 wraps)

Re: minimalist newborn?
Yes, it will vary from baby to baby! My first baby hated the bouncer, my newborn LOVES the thing. So some stuff I think you may not really know until they come out!
Here's my list for next time around:
6 onesies or outfits for "out and about"
1 pair legwarmers
1 pair knit booties
1 hat for after baths
2 wool covers
3 PUL covers
4 nursing tanks (I have 3 and wish I had just 1 more)
A wool wet bag for night time diaper changes so I don't have to get up to the pail
That's all I can think of.
