Have to be able to read to get into Kindergarten?

Has anyone heard of this?

We are actually planning on homeschooling, but my mom keeps trying to scare me with all of these horror stories, and her latest one is that I HAVE to send my daughter to preschool because if something comes up and she ends up needing to go to public school, they won't let her into Kindergarten unless she already knows how to read.

It sounds like complete B.S. to me, but has anyone else heard anything like this? How is that legal?

That is NOT true. There are private schools with requirements but your children are entitled to free public education per federal law should you choose at anytime to send them.

They have reading expectations at the end of kindergarten but a child does not have to know how to read before they even begin kindergarten. Kids come in at all different levels. There might be a really well off district where parents get tutors and have high expectations where a lot of the kids enter reading but it isn't a requirement.

Not true! In most (if not all) states, kindergarten is still optional in public school systems. Many kids enter first grade with just letter sounds under their belt but no real understanding of putting them together to make words. In public schools, first grade is where all the magic happens, not kindergarten. You can send your child to public school at anytime, no matter what she knows. Your mom is just trying to talk you out of homeschooling.

Not true here either. DS learned short vowels and he can read some little words after prek but that's advanced for the public schools

Not true here either. They should be able to know how to read some words by the time they exit kindergarten though but definitely not before otherwise I would say 98% of my daughters class probably wouldn't be going into k.

They don't have to be able to read to enter Kindergarten here either. However, in my son's school district if you try to put your child in a year early, then they need to take a test and parts of the test involves reading a little bit. The school district really discourages putting a child in to Kindergarten early.

Hahahahahaha! You can tell her my son doesn't even speak, didn't read at all then (heck he didn't even know letters) and they let him into a typical kindergarten, no questions asked.
