Nope. They teach reading in Kinder. Plenty of kids go without ever setting foot in a preschool....

Re: Have to be able to read to get into Kindergarten?

Here they hold early admissions 9/1-10/15 at a higher standard and expect some reading and lots of other stuff. Older kids need not know anything but they are expected to learn quickly so the more they can learn earlier the better. They have a list online at our county website. I looked at it.

Tell your mom I am very pro-preschool but all the ones I went to focused on play/socialization not academics. The only ones I know are very expensive or full-time day cares so if it is important to you, even if your kid goes to preschool, you want to supplement them with some "homeschooling."

Not true. My son learned how to read IN Kindergarten. Like 2 weeks before the last day actually, and he passed.

Our district wants 20 sight words. If you don't have that (plus a couple other skills), they suggest you wait a year and have you screened for their free developmental preschool. Granted, I am in an extremely wealthy district (average home price is almost $400,000) and almost every kid here has been to multiple years of preschool, and most people redshirt their kids a year to give them an advantage. DD is the only kid in her Sunday school class of 8 that is going this year. The rest are holding their kids back.

Holy cow! You must be in/near Indy; cost of living in Indiana is OTW pretty inexpensive (I did my MS at Purdue ).

Re: Have to be able to read to get into Kindergarten?

I am in Zionsville Schools. We are the "riff raff" as one teacher called us in our vinyl village just off 65. But the neighborhood that DD's elementary Stonegate is located in, every house is $800,000+, and most are over a million. The haves and have nots are pretty obvious. Some kids vacation in Venezuela, Spain, and Barbados. It is crazy. But, at least the PTO is well funded...

Re: Have to be able to read to get into Kindergarten?

At our school they highly recommend that kids know all their letters and letter sounds before starting K if you want them to truly succede in K. Even that isn't required - it's public school, they can't refuse to let you enroll - but they said kids who don't know their letters before K typically don't do as well as kids who do know them.

Re: Have to be able to read to get into Kindergarten?

When she's talking about preschool she's talking about the 4yr old program at the public school... And DD ALREADY knows numbers 1-10, all of her letter names, and most of her letter sounds.

I think maybe my mom takes us wanting to homeschool as a personal insult because she is a public school teacher. I just can't get her to see not all teachers are as good as she is, and not all public schools are as conservative as the one she teaches at.

If we could afford it we would put DD in a private Christian school starting this year, but we just can't, so homeschooling is the next best option for us.
