Rubberband for discipline?

My DS was running around the "ball tent" today while I was giving pitching lessons to a student. He had a rubberband around his leg just above his knee. The big thick ones. The Mom (who was catching) asked me if it was there for discipline. I said no and asked her what she meant. She said that people will put a rubberband on their child's leg and when they are "bad," they'll pop it. Like stretch it out and let go!! I was REALLY?! She even said that she may consider it for her 5yo.

Do people really do this? Has anyone else heard of it?

Re: Rubberband for discipline?

DS1's psychologist mentioned it as a form of self discipline that some kid use to help keep themselves on task. She talked about it being on the wrist and the child (or adlt) giving themselves little snap when they notice they are off task. She didn't advocate for it at all-just mentioned that it is something that some people use on themselves and find helpful. We haven't used it with DS1.

That's so sad And yes, I've heard of it...but not for use on a child, for use on an adult, like was already mentioned.

I have never heard of that with the exception in doing it to ones self on the wrist. Like if you bite your nails, snap the band when you catch yourself doing it. I would never do that to my child. I am the evil mom that tried a drop of hot sauce on the tongue before (to my older son for swearing). He said it was yummy and asked for more. Never did that again. Then I found out it was considered abusive. So I really never considered it again for my other child (ren)

Seriously?
I think some people have a very twisted view of abuse these days.

A rubber band though? That's like purposely giving your child paper cuts. Ow! I'm not sure I see it being very effective at all anyway.

Me too.

I haven't heard of the rubberband thing except for self discipline. If you were going to do that, why wouldn't you just give the child a swat?

I have been told time out is abusive too. I'm sure my use of Dr Bronners peppermint is abuse too. That was a swearing punishment as well. I figured if people brush their teeth with it it can't be harmful.
