We do, but there are just four of us and my husband leaves work at 4. If it were me, I'd eat at the table everyday with the two little ones at a decent time and take it seriously. If you make it the daily ritual it has the potential to be, your older one just may want to be part of it. (Build it and they will come) Your husband... can catch up.

DH just changed his work schedule so that he works until 8:30 Monday-Thursday. The kids are asleep or nearly there when he gets home. He used to get home at 7:15 and we did all eat together, but my kids are admittedly on a later schedule than most.

I do feel a bit bad that we don't all eat together, but mine are both really young yet. We do all eat breakfast together, and we go see DH for lunch quite often, so it's not like they're deprived of time with him.

No DH works 7pm to 3:30am and DS is only 2 so he is in bed by 7pm most nights. We do family dinners at the table usually 2 of his 3 nights off. Family lunch many days though!

Not during the week. DH's never consistently off work on time. I aim to have dinner by 6, and if he's home great, if not I just eat with the kids. I don't think I could hold them off until 7:15. I might bump it to 6:30 when I return to work because I'll be home later and the kids will be a little older.

We do now.

But when DH is in a shift job, we don't.

Can you try a nice breakfast together instead?

My dh works nights so he sleeps until about 9pm. I wouldnt wait that long for dinner. I agree with tge other suggestions of family breakfast or lunch. Usually our big meal is lunch, dh gets home around noon and we eat together then.

Re: I want to eat dinner at the table as a family..

moms and kids can still have a family meal even without dad. that is at least some structure for the kids, even if dad cant join every day.

I wish... It's way I grew up and I think it's important that we all sit down together as a family. DH also does not get home until 7ish so I usually end up having dinner with my almost three year old and one year old by myself. DH joins us when he gets home if we're still eating. I figure if I at least start getting into the habit now even if it's just me and the kids for most nights, it will be part of our routine later when the kids are able to hold out a little longer. I try to aim for a couple nights a week and just try to be happy with that.

We do, but DH is home by 6.

On nights when he has late meetings, we just eat without him. If he's present and it's meal time, we're sitting down together.
