Umbilical hernia from pregnancy

Anyone have experience with this and/or the repair?

Apparently, when pregnant w/ DS1, I developed an umbilical hernia and had no idea. I never experienced pain or discomfort and assumed my belly button just got stretched out and puffy looking from pregnancy. he's now 2.5 and it never occurred to me to have it checked out before now. Now I'm 20 wks pregnant w/ #2 and started experiencing pain and pressure behind my belly button so I asked at my appt last week. Dr confirmed it is an umbilical hernia and said it would need repaired after I've recovered from my c-sec this time. He's not able/willing to do it during the surgery and I didn't really question that at the time but now I'm curious the reason?!? Seems like it would be easier to get it over with while I'm already in surgery?! His suggestion in the meantime to minimize the pressure is an ace bandage wrap which I've been using with some relief. I'm just afraid it's going to get really bad before delivery

Re: Umbilical hernia from pregnancy

I got a really bad umbilical hernia with DS1 (my2nd child). I carried my 3rd child to term just fine....it got uncomfy at times but it wasn't bad. The maternal fetal specialists told me that I could just get it repaired when I'm done having babies (which hopefully won't be any time soon since we want a big family). I think you will know if the pain gets really bad that you will need to have it repaired before another pregnancy....but then you will most likely need the surgery 2x.

My doc fixes them during sections. If you are done having babies have it repaired, if you are not done don't do the repair because it will just come undone again.

Mine is pretty severe but they usually get better the bigger the baby gets. Week 20-28 was the worst for me, then baby got big enough to move my intestines out of the hole. There is no real risk unless you strangulate your bowel but its rare during pregnancy. Severe pain and bathroom issues are the signs of that happening.

I wore a support and taped my tummy with gauze and medical tape. It helped a little bit and kept it from popping when I moved. I have not had it repaired and it did not interfere with labor/delivery vaginally. I am hoping for another baby so have put the repair off several times.

I have no issues with it at all after pregnancy and baby 7 was born 8 months ago.

Thanks for the input!! This will be our last baby so I need to think ahead to having it repaired. Wondering if I should try to find a Dr who can do it during my section. Hmmm......

Re: Umbilical hernia from pregnancy

I have an umbilical hernia (thanks P90X!) and I would totally try to find a doctor that will repair it during the section as long as they have experience with it. I've heard that hernia surgeries hurt pretty bad so I'd rather get two procedures done in one surgery kwim?

I won't be getting mine repaired any time soon; prego with our first and will have at least a couple more before I get repaired.

Had an appointment today and my new OB (within the same practice) is having me consult with a general surgeon whom she's worked with before to attend my c-section and do the repair at that time. Hopefully that plan works out and I can get it all over with at the same time
