Re: I don't want baby's first food to be cereal, suggestions please :)

Thank you for the posts! We are leaning toward BLW, next week will be 6 months and I am getting excited to let Flynn participate more. She likes watching us eat and moves her mouth like she is chewing her lip. Just haven't decided what to start with.

Never did baby cereal. Overcooked 1-minute oatmeal is fine! Applesauce (cook an apple and mush it up), mushy banana... sweet potato.... whatever you're eating!

Sorry, just saw this. From ebf poop to solid food poop it was about the same As the transition was with my oldest who did purées. I didn't start any solids until 8 1/2 months this time (my older 2 started cereal at 4 months) and it was so much better IMHO

My son's first food was egg yolk mashed with some formula. I looked up the research and it seemed like a good alternative to cereal (although not everyone agrees). The egg white is the part that is the typical allergen to the yolk is considered safe. He then went on to have avocado, which is also a popular first food choice.

I agree. My DD hated (and still does) cereals. What worked for us a first foods were: bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes. Apples can be problematic (one LO loved them, the other refused them). Both thought sweet potatoes were wonderful. My only other suggestion is to alternate the color of the foods you introduce...you can actually turn your kids skin orange-tinged if they eat too much squash/sweet potato/carrots without other veggies mixed in, lol.

edit: and be prepared to see what you feed them come out in the poo, so if you introduce blueberries, you will have blue poo!

The first food I want to give my daughter is avocado. Like, I'm really excited about it! haha It's got the good fats, great nutrients, naturally soft, and it has a great non-bland flavor.

Definitely agree about holding off on the 'sweet' foods. Sugar tastes so good, they gotta learn to love the veggies too. (there may be better reasons, but this is one that motivates me the most! ever try to feed a toddler veggies these days?)

eta: Cereals and bananas are known to cause constipation. No idea why they're the most popular first food.

We've been doing solids for about 2 1/2 months... I really wanted my DD to like avocado, but she seems to hate it. I'll keep trying though, it's one of MY faves! Yams, pears, peas, squash, green beans pureed. The little mesh feeder thing was great for us too--throw a hunk of frozen banana or a slice of ripe pear or squash, really anything soft and she could control it a little bit more easily. She really wanted to feed herself, but wasn't very good at it at first and got so frustrated!

My second child never ate baby cereal. She went straight from ebf to bf and table food around 6 months. Her first food was avocado. I chose that bc I heard you should start veggies before fruits so they don't just want sweet things, and also bc it is easy to mush up.
