The Toddler Interrogator (Why?)

My 3.5 yo has been deep in the "Why?" phase for about a year now. While I appreciate that he is curious and wants to learn, and likes the security of hearing the same answers over and over again, I admit, it's quite annoying! The worst part is he will ask a question and then move onto the next question before I even have a chance to answer... he's not even interested in hearing the response.

I have noticed that he asks more questions when he is tired or hungry, so it's definitely a comfort thing for him. I've been trying to encourage him to "listen to his body", and I'm worried that it's hard to hear what that rumbling in your tummy is trying to tell you when there's so much noise coming out of your mouth... :P

As for answers, I try to keep my answers brief but accurate, but sometimes it's just not a simple answer, like trying to explain what the Mars Rover is doing with the ChemCam. Maybe I should give a longer answer instead to encourage him to listen? I've also been asking him "why do you think...?", or asking him to listen or wait until I've finished reading the sentence before asking questions. is that bad?

Any survival tips for this phase, and any clue how long it lasts?

Still going at 4.5, sorry. The "what do you think?" does help now.

I'll trade you "why" for "no." I get "no" all day and night long!

Got to say of love if my YDS would do this. He's not talking much yet at 32 months. Although my YDD has been saying "me me me" so much it's driving me crazy and she's 1

Re: The Toddler Interrogator (Why?)

My 5yo is still in the midst, and I don't see it getting better any time soon. One thing I have noticed is that in some ways she's trying to have a conversation with me, but doesn't really know how to do the back and forth. So she asks me questions. I try and put the questions back on her like "You just asked that question, and what did I tell you." or something to that effect. It works about half the time

OMG, I have the same thing, turned 3 in june. Last night on a walk....why is there grass here(on the sidewalk), why is the gate open, why is ......non stop, not even a break for the answer.

I think they just have so many questions in their mind to say...huh, why this,
