Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

I am having trouble with super strong ammonia smell in my nighttime fitted diapers. My daytime pockets are fine, but the nighttimes are so STRONG. I know that's naturally going to happen some, since it's holding 12 hours of pee. But goodness, it's offensive it's so strong! I use sbish OBFs and Thirsties duo fitteds with Thirsties covers. Both smell the same. I added 2 tbsp blue Dawn to my laundry routine to see if that would work, and they don't smell once they are clean but still stink once I take them off in the AM. Am I just doomed for super stinky mornings? Or is there anything else I can do?

Re: Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

Try spraying the diapers out on the morning to remove some of the urine. Also try alterig your wash routine. What are you doing now? How much detergent are you using and what kind? I'm not familiar with sbish, but I know Thristies Duo Fitteds would be bleached out if you put bleach on them.

Re: Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

Well, my Thirsties fitteds are actually white, as are my sbish (except the stitching), so I think some bleach would be OK. My wash routine is:
- Cold rinse on "super" for most water possible
- Hot wash/cold rinse w/ 3/4 scoop Country Save detergent
- Extra cold rinse
I have a top loader and normal water.

Then I dry my fitteds & inserts on low (PUL hangs dry).

Are you suggesting to regularly use bleach? Or just once in a while?

I use bleach every wash and have ABSOLUTELY not stink. My pail doesn't stink either, even if the dipes sit for more than 3 days.

Re: Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

I would suggest changing your cold rinse to a short cold wash to ensure as much yucky stuff is out before washing in it. Increase your detergent to the full scoop (or maybe even more if that doesn't work). Everything else sounds good. You may also want to try another detergent. I swear by Tide Original Liquid. I fill it to the 2 line every wash. I've been using it for 3 years without any additives (no bleach, vinegar, baking soda, etc.) and no stinkies or build-up.

Re: Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

I have seen so many diapers sent in that were bleached and there are completely useless now. That's one of the reasons why I won't suggest using it (except on insert or prefolds in extreme cases) and I won't use it myself. I know it works well for some people it's a strong chemical and it should be used as a last resort IMO.

Re: Ammonia stink in my fitteds!!

I would bleach too. I've been using bleach for years with zero problems. As long as you don't dump it directly on the diapers I can't see how it would cause problems. Have never had a single bleach spot on fitteds with prints etc. I would also try the full scoop of detergent and then see if that helps it. You might just have to use it once a month or every few weeks as opposed to every wash.
