Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
I had posted this over in Parenting but was hoping to get some advice from the experts! I'm planning to foster primarily newbies/infants with special needs, medically fragile, drug exposure etc (there are a TON of little ones through our new office) and I'm trying to figure out what the best sleeping solution would be... Any thoughts?
Here's my original post-- I've been looking at buying some sort of bassinet for when I start doing foster care again and came across the Cariboo bassinets. http://www.cariboostore.com/ The price is pretty high but I've been seeing them come up on craigslist every once in a while. I was just wondering if anyone has used one and either liked it or disliked it. I wouldn't be inclined to buy a bassinet usually but where I can't co-sleep and the babies will likely be special needs, medically fragile, or little ones who are withdrawing I thought it may be a good idea to keep them really close. I'm on a tight budget but the one I saw listed on Craigslist was the gentle motions http://www.cariboostore.com/product/...sinet/mahogany one with the changer http://www.babyearth.com/cariboo-bassinet-changer.html (don't think I'd really use it), and the canopy http://www.cariboostore.com/product/...ogany/mahogany which I'd kinda like . It was listed for $300... I was thinking about asking if they'd take a little less... I hate to ask people to come down on a price but I really like this bassinet and figured it may be worth a shot...

Re: Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
I saw your other post and since you have a child, I'd be really worried about it tipping over if she climbed/played with it. I would get a mini crib (smaller than a regular one) for your room or a small PNP (we used the Graco PNP lite and it was very nice). A bassinet only lasts for 2-3 months or a bit longer and a PNP or crib will last much longer. I wanted a pretty bassinet but it doesn't make sense for that short of a time.

Re: Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
I have a regular standard crib and a mini pack'n'play, but what really saved me for the thee newborns I've had is a Fisher Price Rock'n'Play. The incline was so nice for newbies. One of my babes was withdrawing and another had exposure issues and it worked nicely. Now, with many medical needs, I don't know how it would work, but for newborns it has been so nice! Usually $50-$60 and probably pretty easy to find on Craigslist.

Re: Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
Thanks so much for all of the advice! I will have to look into that fisher price one.
pcjs- I would definitely worry about that too normally... I'm lucky that my dd is not the kind of kiddo who tends to do things like that for whatever reason!! I got lucky with her as far as that goes.. she is very very mature! If I had other kiddos at the same time I would be nervous though.. thank you for that thought! I actually have a mini crib, a regular crib, and a p&p The regular crib is in my dds room, the mini is in my room and the p&p is stored away right now... I guess I just remember my dd not sleeping in any kind of regular crib and wondered whether the other kiddos would be like that too. I tried starting her out in the p&p as a newbie but she HATED it!

Re: Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
I would not buy anything more until you get a child. The Fisher Price is a good suggestion and it came out after my son was born so we didn't get it but the bouncy seat was our lifesaver. But, that is not approved for full-time sleeping. If a little one hates the crib, you can try a wedge under the mattress to put it at an angle. That got our kid in the crib.

drug babies can be sensitive to changes. Mine was. I would suggest starting out with what you would use long term- crib.

I too swear by the FP newborn rock n play sleeper. I have 2. My girl is in crib now most nights but if she is having issuer regulating it helps lots. Great for exposure and reflux kids.

I use the arms reach mini cosleeper set up as a bassinet. We also use a swing for reflux kids. My kiddo didn't sit til 12 months so it lasted forever, then we moved to a crib in my room til he was about 19 months. No one at DCS batted an eye at him being over 1 and in my room.

Re: Best sleeping arrangement? Advice from experienced infant sn foster moms?
I just googled this and amazon reviews came up. The vast majority of the reviews stated that this product caused tortocollis and one actually said that this product caused a life long deformity in her child. Wow. Many stated that they were using it for niht time sleep only and baby had lots of tummy time. This alone wouldnt put me off from using it but it does make me nervous.
