Re: Is this horrible?!

I stay away from most every no no food items during pregnancy but I don't really do it with lunch meat, just make sure I'm not eating any that has been sitting out or has been around for long time.

Re: Is this horrible?!

I served deli meat wraps at my sister's baby shower, lol. We both ate it and we are fine. Listeria is very rare, so it's like a 1 in 10 million chance you would get it. Some people just aren't willing to take that tiny risk.

You're fine Everything in moderation (generally) is fine. I've had a few subs with lunch meat on them with each of my pregnancies.

I hope this doesn't upset anyone. I don't think you're horrible. I avoid deli meats not simply because of the listeria risk but also because of the usual nitrate content, which can damage a developing baby (not to mention turning carcinogenic in general). So, it's kind of a double risk.

Re: Is this horrible?!

I eat lunchmeat all the time. You are at an increased risk when eating it if exposed to lysteria (spelling?) while pregnant because it can make you very sick (pregnant or not). It is safe if heated to a certain temp. not sure what temp.. but when you heat up lunchmeat the nitrates apparently turn into carcinogens and are no good for you. If you feel sick at all, then go to the doctor. Otherwise you will be fine.

This is why I avoid lunchmeat not just during pregnancy but in general. I don't want the nitrates. Our local organic meat store sells nitrate free lunchmeat so if I get a craving I'll head there.
I don't want to upset anyone either, it's really up to the individual as to what you feel comfortable with.

Re: Is this horrible?!

It makes me glad to see that I am not the only one who doesn't give up lunch meat while pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Is this horrible?!

I didn't eat any cold lunch meat with my 1st... then completely forgot that rule with my 2nd... she turned out ok I think the chance of getting Listeria is pretty low... Dr. just told me to follow common sense and not eat slimy/old lunch meat...
