I think 6+ is large. But that definitely isn't how society thinks! I had 2 boys and then a girl... after DD I was asked often if I was done now... And even now with this pregnancy I get asked how many more do I think I will have. I just shrug and say, well I am too old to compete with the Duggers, so it won't be that many!

Re: Just how "many" is many?

Well, before our 6th baby was born this past summer, my husband always used to joke around with me that he couldn't believe that I didn't think we had a "large family." I think he thought we had a large family starting when #3 or #4 was born. Anyways, now that we have 6 kids, I finally agree with him that it qualifies us as having many children. I think it's because now we can't go anywhere without attracting attention and people commenting on how many kids we have. And I never had to actually count my children to make sure they were all with me until I got to #6. Now I feel like I'm always counting!
So I'd say that 6+ is many!

Re: Just how "many" is many?

A lady muttered rather loudly to her friend, "Wow! She had a lot kids!" behind my back at the mall a couple days ago... I only have 3. I don't start thinking "wow" until 8+. 5+ wouls be "several".

Re: Just how "many" is many?

I don't know! I have 6 & it doesn't feel like a lot - but we had a LOT of losses & a bout of infertility,so our children are spaced far apart. Maybe if they were closer in age I would feel like it is a lot?

One more child & our older ones will have to drive separately when we go to functions. That will probably be when it feels like a lot to me! LOL!

5+ is a lot for me. I have three including twins. People stare everywhere we go. I'm used to it now.

Growing up there was a family of 4 kids across the street and I thought that was large. Now it would have to be 5+. My friend is pregnant with 5th, DH and I have talked about a fourth. I told friend that I can't wait to hang out together at the park with our 9 kids!

Re: Just how "many" is many?

I think a lot of things are made for a family of four (two parents, two kids) - cars, hotel rooms, restaurant booths, etc.
Most people I know consider 1 or 2 the norm, with 3 being a bit overwhelming but not too much. Beyond that I think society in general believes four or more is a lot.
However, for me personally, I think six would be the number I would say someone has many children.
