I need a mixer!

So I broke my mixer today. Can't blame the thing....it was the cheapest Walmart model and was about 8 years old. I don't mix a ton of stuff--but I do make butter with it about once a week and mix other stuff occasionally too. I would like a stand model (last one was handheld) so I can do something else while the cream is mixing. I would like one that's going to be nice and last, but don't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. What should I get?

Bosch Compact http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS.../chrisficti-20 I don't have one but I couldn't in good conscience recommend anything Kitchenaid. Even their dishwashers are garbage! The Bosch gets great reviews and I have been eyeing this (or it's big brother the universal) for years!

I had a Sunbeam stand mixer a few years ago before DH got me my KitchenAid. It was a decent mixer, and I think I paid around $40 for it, though I can't remember for sure.

Re: I need a mixer!

They're expensive new, but I always would suggest the KA stand mixer that has multiple attachments. We were fortunate enough to receive one as a hand-me-down & I love it. You can also use it for much more than just mixing & it lasts. I've had it for a few years & before that it was DH's grandparents for a number of years. If I had to buy one today, I'd get the same one - either making the investment, or more likely finding one second hand in good condition.

Wow, I've never seen a mixer like that before. You hate kitchenaid? I've never heard any one say anything negative about their mixers....can I ask why you feel that way? I thought about a KA, but I don't really want to spend that much. From the searching I've been doing though I was leaning towards biting the bullet--I've read loads of good things about them.

Just don't get the "professional" style Kitchenaid. It's a good price @ Costco around the holidays but I wish we'd spent more for the regular style, it's easier to attach the bowl and--well, it's just easier, period.

Re: I need a mixer!

I am on my 3rd Artistan KA mixer. They told me that they will not send me another one if this breaks so I have been stuck with it ever since. I just try to treat it VERY gently and pray that it will hold out until I can get something better. I purchased the mixer shortly before I got married in December 2003.

I REALLY wanted a KA mixer prior to this. I had always heard GREAT things about them and I LOVE cooking. So when DH said that I should get one since it looked like it wasn't going to be purchased off the registry, I jumped at the chance! It lasted less then a year before it needed to be replaced as it was acting funny. The second one was the same story. They hated the attachments for it. It would make funny noises even though I was using EXACTLY how it was intended (I was grinding chuck meat at the time for hamburger). I didn't use it excessively or anything. It just sounded VERY bad.

After those 2, I started to feel like I was the only one in the US that hated KA mixers. I was a bit bummed. I mean it is sad to long for something for so long and then have it not live up to even minimal expectations.

Fed up from all the glowing reviews of KA mixers one day, I decided to find out if I was alone. FAR from it. You can find people like me ALL OVER if you just look for us. Turns out that in the 90's (maybe it was the late 80's) KA was sold to Whirlpool. Whirlpool relied on the KA name and started to cut corners. My in-laws (who have an older KA and like it fine) have even complained about Whirlpool appliances.

So then I started sniffing around. Turns out my uncle (who likes to feed his whole family, which is about the size of a small army, okay maybe 10-15 people) has had this same problem I did with the mixer. I am calling him an idiot though because he just went with a more powerful KA to fix his problems. Then I was talking to a friend of mine about how I didn't like my mixer. She mentions to me that she has a KA dishwasher and she has had nothing but problems with it since she got it a few years ago. She informed me it wasn't a cheap dishwasher either (as I said that some cheap dishwashers are just bad in general). I got the impression that it was in the $700+ range.

So when we went looking for a dishwasher, I told the guy at Sears that I wanted a dishwasher that cleaned dishes (as not all do) and was not manufactured by KA. This really limited our choices and we ended up with a Bosch that we have had for about 5 months and LOVE. He told us that some Kenmore Dishwashers are made by KA (AKA Whirlpool, the others are made by Bosch), so it is very important that you talk to someone knowledgeable when you make a purchase like this and do ALL of your homework.

Right now I do use my mixer and it is out on the counter (high premium space in my kitchen). I use it at least once a week and every time I turn it on, I pray that it does whatever I ask of it. I can hear weird sounds coming from it, and I am certain that if I were to open it up I would see plastic gears that have a few teeth missing. I use it to mix and kneed a loose bread, and occasional other tasks. I don't go near it with any attachments as it isn't happy just doing what it was intended for. It often gets HOT to the touch when mixing. It isn't a happy mixer at all and I am one VERY dissatisfied customer that will never go back to KA again. I also can't recommend it to anyone.
