Can a child attend a public school in another town?

Does anyone know the laws about attending a public school in another town, specifically Arkansas. We are considering homeschooling but I want to know what all of my options are. We are definitely not sending our children to the school district that we are in. I have heard (at least in Arkansas) that you can put in for a transfer but I'm assuming it's something that has to be approved, and obviously they wouldn't be able to ride the bus (not something I would need anyway.)

Does anyone know more about this, or how it works in their state. Can you switch to a public school in a completely different town. I'm pretty clueless on all this.

I'm not in Arkansas, but in our state it is up to each individual school district. Some have an open enrollment policy, some do not. You would have to research the school district you are interested in to find out what their policy is.

I went to public school in washington but I was able to get a boundary exception when I moved in with my mom after living with my father. I had been going to those schools since 6th grade and I was a junior in high school.

Then I left high school rather abruptly (long story) and I was able to go to summer school on the other side of the country to finish the 1.5 credits I needed to graduate with my class.

So I think it would depend on history, I don't think you could just move to a cheap area and choose your school in a nice area.

Each state is different. In Indiana, you fill out an out-of-district application and it is free (This went into effect last year). Most states require you to pay tuition. The accepting school has to have room, and you have to have good grades/discipline.

Our district takes everyone because we get money for each student. Every out of district transfer gains us about $6,000.

Call the accepting district and ask what their procedure is.

I think it would depend on the school and district. Around here you can go pretty much anywhere you want because the schools are so tiny. When I lived in a city with crowded schools though it was really difficult for anybody to get transferred to a different school. My dad had to buy a really expensive house to make sure we were going to one of the best schools in the city. I would call the school and ask them about it.

In texas you can. As far as I know(what my mom did for me-small town) was simply fill out some paper work. Granted this was a while ago but I have a teacher friend (in a big city) who says its still pretty easy to do but I dont know the details.

Here you can only do that if the local school is a failing title one school that does not meet goals. If it is then you can go to one of the two receiving schools. They provide busing unless the school meets its goals then you can no longer get busing but you can stay at the school.

I think you need to talk to someone on the school board. Or the superintendent. I am in Arkansas and people do it here all the time. We have quite a few families that send their children to our school who live in other towns.

I would call the school you want them to attend and ask.

Here you have to fill out a form with both the home district and the district of choice. The home district has to release you and the new district has to accept you. There is a good bit of money (not yours) involved due to ADA (the amount the government pays a district for each student enrolled).
