Ammonia burn or just diaper rash?

I used a BG Elemental for overnight last night, and baby woke up with her whole bottom bright red, almost looks like a light sunburn. I guess the BGEs aren't staydry, and i didn't realize that since I've never had any problems with it during the day.

She's definitely hurting and grabbing at it today. I got the diapers used, but I did strip them a couple of weeks ago with RLR. Is it possible this is ammonia burn, or is it just diaper rash all over form having the wet on her skin overnight? She's back in pockets at daycare today and I told them to coat her in CJ's, and I'll try to keep her diaperless this evening. Anything else I should do?

No, they are not stay-dry so it's possible that it was the wetness bothering her. Do your diapers smell like ammonia? If you had ammonia you would know it. Do you usually have ammonia or stink in night diapers?

I agree. Ammonia burn is going to have blisters - especially if she was in the diaper all night.

No blistering, and I don't notice a big ammonia stink, except maybe once or twice when I've let the diapers go past 3 days between washing. Definitely no ammonia smell when I change her in the mornings. Hopefully it's just rash then. It looks like a sunburn, but it was bad enough for daycare to call and tell me about it since I forgot to mention it to them when I brought her in.

I guess I don't get the point of all the natural fiber diapers if they aren't stay dry. Guess you just can't use them overnight? I'll go back to my poly fleece pockets, I'm selling these! You'd think I would have learned when I had the same thing happen with BG Bamboo fitteds overnight.

I'm sorry they didn't work for you. It's amazing to me how every baby is so different. Some can't handle anything but natural fibers, other cannot handle being wet for long at all, and still others don't seem to be bothered by anything you put on them. Their resell should be pretty good though.

I hope your little one's rash clears up soon!

I wonder if it could be a detergent issue? We had a rash like that (sunburn-like in very defined areas where DS's insert was touching) when we used RnG.

Red sunburn-like rash is ammonia burn. You need to strip them and then change up your wash routine so it doesn't happen again.

Well many children have no problems with things that are not stay-dry. Many do better with natural fibers so it really just depends on the child. Your LO may not be able to handle them though. It could be as simple as adding a fleece liner though. No need to sell them just yet.

Stay dry is not the same thing as natural fibers. Actually, they're pretty much opposite. You could always cut microfleece liners to fit in the BGEs if you wanted to keep using them at night? (I bought some at JoAnn's and cut it up myself, it only cost a few dollars.)

I also think it sounds like sensitivity to wetness. I bet your DD is much better by tonight.
