Question for you running mamas...

I posted this in the off topic section before I realized there was a health/fitness section. I got alot of tips there and maybe you can help even more.

I have just started running. I was doing the c25k trying to train for a 5k at the end of April. But after the third or fourth time running, my knees have started hurting. It started in one knee down to my ankle, but now its just both knees.

I figured it was my shoes, so I did go get some new ones with more support (I overpronate).
The first time in my new shoes I was scared to run. I didn't want it to hurt, but when I did run, it didn't hurt at all, but when I was done with the walk/run, they hurt soooo bad.

Now, three days later, they are still very sore. The pain is just below my knees.(where my knee area and shins meet and toward the inside) It hurts to put pressure on that spot and after I sit for a while, they are very stiff.

What am I doing wrong? Is this something that will get better, or should I just stop running all together?

It's so frustrating, because I really was enjoying running until this...
Any advice?

Re: Question for you running mamas...

it sounds like shin splints...if it is, ice them when you get done running, And make sure you are running on a level surface, like the road isn't tilted one way or the other, because i think that makes it worse.
sorry you are dealing with this. I know it can be hard to keep up with a workout plan if it is painful..

Re: Question for you running mamas...

I thought about shin splints...but this is up closer to my knee and only on the inside of my leg,not outside. From what I read, I was thinking shin splints would be more on the outside of the leg and further down on the leg...Also, would shin splints be a small area of pain? The area I'm dealing with is probably only an inch in length.

I don't know much about all this stuff, so I could be very wrong. I do know it hurts though!!!

Does it sound like it could be this?

That sounds like runner's knee, you get it from too much too soon. Take a break to heal up, and when you start back you want to go slowly and back off when you have any pain. Also, cycling or quad workouts can help build knee stability, so make sure you add in those kinds of workouts, too.

I find I have to stretch my knees after long runs or they'll get sore. I do this by bracing my foot against something (curb, fence, whatever) and I sort of turn my leg side to side while my foot stays stationary. I do it very slowly and hold about 10-20 seconds. Sort of like a plie.

Re: Question for you running mamas...

my guess would be an overuse syndrome or patellar tendonitis.
rest, ice and if you need to take otc nsaids...if those help the pain even just temporarily then it is prob one of the above. if none of the above help the pain i would get it looked at

That sounds like it! Exactly like it!!! I have searched everywhere trying to find an answer. Runners knee sounded close, but not exactly, but this...this may be it!

I have decided to cut out all my walking/running activities until it's completely better. Running was not even possible and even after I walked, it was painful,so I've cut it out too. I'll start some of the stretches and see how it goes. Thank you so much!!!
