Re: Possible to actually *ruin* diapers??

I agree that it may be the suedecloth irritating him. Try putting him on only prefolds for a day and see if it clears up. My daughter couldn't tolerate BG suedecloth for more than a couple hours (so if I put her in a 4.0 I'd have to use something else at the next change). For whatever reason, she grew out of it and now it doesn't bother her. I hope you find a solution. Please don't beat yourself up if you have to do sposies though. Yes, cloth is wonderful but not if it's making your life harder.

Just throwing out ideas.....you didn't mention if ou have tried different detergents? Not had the problem with ds diapers but for me, I tend to develop suddenly sensitivities to products I have used previously. Soaps, shampoo, lotion, laundry detergent - sometimes I start to get an itchy rash and have to switch something out. Maybe he has become sensitive to the detergent?

Re: Possible to actually *ruin* diapers??

Ok so we've used Charlie's for two years now. Use it for all of our clothes. We did switch to Rockin' Green to see if it was the detergent. Same thing. And I've tried doing all prefolds to see if it's just the BG but same thing. I even leave him cover-less so I know when he's wet right away. Just spent all day yesterday in sposies trying to recover from two days of cloth. : (

Ok so you said you used bleach but did you just use it once? When you say they were better after, what do you mean? Did they smell and then smell better after that? Do you have ammonia smell with them ever? A lot of people have problems with both of those detergents as far as rashes and them being able to get diapers clean.

rockin' green was the root of all evil in my experience. i thought it would be great to try it but man, i had troubles ever since. i finally stripped with RLR, went back to country save, and ditched the pockets. prefolds are my new fav. no problems since.

I was going to ask about amonia too, this sounds very similar to what was happening to my friends daughter and she had an amonia issue. She ended up getting all new inserts because she couldn't eliminate it. Still far cheaper than new dipes.

I also second that maybe another detergent change...

Re: Possible to actually *ruin* diapers??

Hmm well we've since gone back to Charlie's b/c RG didn't seem any better. The bleach thing we did twice on the BG. And as for the ammonia smell our diaper lady did a baking soda soak/rinse and that helped alot. I think she's adding baking soda to rinse frequently now? And I know there are extra rinses and such because how else could you run a diaper service?? My real question is why do people say you can't use such and such detergent because it will ruin your diapers? I really think too many months w/other people's detergent residue and not enough rinses has made them awful. I'm sad because he was fine for so long...

Re: Possible to actually *ruin* diapers??

I have no idea why some people say that but it is a pervasive myth. It's simply not true. I highly doubt that other people's detergent would ruin anything. The most likely issue is that they simply are not clean. Multiple rinses and baking soda will not kill bacteria. Especially in something like an AIO that has several layers. The ammonia means bacteria. I really think that using a better and stronger detergent with occasional bleaching will solve your problem. Unfortunately neither of those detergents have a very good track record for a lot of people.

I switched to tide free and gentle, and that did the trick for getting rid of smell for me.
