Question What carrier for an older toddler??

I have a 21 month old 30 pounder that I would like to get a carrier for, but some are so expensive that I would like something versatile that I could also put a newborn in as I would like more children.
Which is best ladies?

ETA Would any votes change if I wanted just a back carrier for my 21 month old???

I have a Babyhawk MeiTai and it's wonderful... bought it when I was PG with DS #2 and wear both in it comfortably!

I used my sling to carry my daughter on my hip until she really didn't ask to be carried much anymore, I guess until about 2 yrs or so. All we have is a sling (actually 3 of them), so I haven't tried the others.

Beco Beco beco for sure!!!!

I went through a billion carriers until I found the Beco!! it has all the great things of a MT but the ease of snapping the straps!! I cant say enough great things about a BECO and If I had unlimited amount of money we would have several and several BECOs

Re: What carrier for an older toddler??

I'd get a woven wrap for carrying a toddler, and for the versatility. Wraps are great for little babies as well, and provide support for the wearer's back as the child grows. I'm carrying a 21mo old while pregnant, mostly in the wrap, and find it pretty comfortable, and plan to use it for the new baby, too!

Re: What carrier for an older toddler??

I voted for a mei tai, because of its versatility for use with a newborn as well.

I have been through a lot of carriers in the past couple of years. My current faves for my 2 year old are the ergo and the beco, simply because of how easy they are to pop him into. The long straps on my MT are less convenient with lots of ups and downs, though they are manageable. I have a couple of woven wraps, which I use occasionally, though not as often as I did a year or so ago. DS2 isn't as patient as he used to be, and it takes me a few seconds to make sure I hav ethe wrap tied on properly.

The ergo and beco are comfy with a heavy toddler, but I'm not sure how well they would work with a newborn. I like the added flexbility of a MT with a little babe. There are infant inserts for both the ergo and beco, but I don't know how well they work. Another option would be to go with the ergo or beco and get an inexpensive sling to use for the newborn, then move the baby up to the ergo/beco when he's a little bigger (I'd guess they'd work well from about 4 months on).

Re: What carrier for an older toddler??

not to hijack the post, but what IS the difference between the Beco and the Ergo. The only difference I can really see (online) is that the Beco has lots of prints. It seems awfully more expensive than the Ergo just for the prints.....

I haven't voted, because while I LOVE my Babyhawk MT, I'm not getting the best back carry out of it. I'm sure practice is part of the issue, but it seems like a Beco or Ergo would make it easier to get a good fit for the back carry w/o as much of a learning curve...

We use a Baby Hawk MT for our 2 1/2 y.o. who weights about 32lbs. He fits comfortably and dh says it's comfortable. I haven't been able to try it out since I'm pregnant.
