I voted ERGO from your list but if you want something super versatile that's well worth its price and would work with a wide range of ages, I'd go with a nice woven wrap.

I voted MT, I like the beco & ergo, but to use with a NB too, I'd have to go with that

It depends. Are you going to carry him for a long period of time, like in a grocery store? If so, I vote for mei tai. Or is it going to be one of those toddler things where he will want up then down, then back up again, then down, etc....a sling/pouch is good for that!

I'm not sure- I will be carrying him for containment and am hoping he would be comfortable and happy on my back. I have a playtex hip hammock but it makes my back hurt.

Anyone try a beco with the insert for a tiny baby???

I voted mei tai but I also use a patapum, structured backpack and hip carry in a pouch.

Re: What carrier for an older toddler??

if you just want to use it for the 21 month old, i think a soft structured carrier like ergo/patapum/beco/yamo is the way to go. but those aren't the greatest IMO for an infant (even with the infant insert for the ergo). in fact, i don't like them for front carriers at all. i know some people do, but not my preference.

the most versatile newborn to pre-schooler is definitely a MT. i still wear my 32 pound 21 month old all the time in a larger-bodied MT (i made it myself, but body dimensions are similar to the Kozy). MT's are much better for front carriers, and you can also do a hip carry with a MT (though i never do that - that's when i use a ring sling or a pouch). MT's can also be worn high up on your back so the child can see over your shoulder, which i don't think is comfortable at all with a structured carrier because of the padding and the buckles.

but nothing beats the structured carrier for hiking or if i know i'm going to be wearing him for a long time, like at the zoo or a fair or something.

wraps are also extremely versatile. you can't go wrong with a german woven wrap like the didymos or storchenwiege. i think wraps are even better for newborns (though i used my MT a lot when DS was a newborn) - and they are definitely easier to nurse in than a MT (though once a baby has head control, it's pretty easy nursing in a MT as well). and they're extremely sturdy and supportive with heavier/older kids. but for me, personally, i think a MT is quicker and easier to put on and take off, i find them less bulky and cooler for warmer weather.
