Sweeping Membranes @ 38weeks ..? update

I have my 38 week appointment tomorrow and she offered to sweep my membranes. Last week after she checked me I was 4cm and 75% effaced - I had bloody show Mon-Thurs but it has stopped since. I have had 2 episodes of false labor.

I just don't know if I want to do it. I want to have this baby but don't want to push it if it's not ready. I have been hiking 1-2 miles a day, EPO & 5W, eating pineapple, having sex, ect.. I think my body is obviously showing signs of being ready- what do you think?

It wouldn't hurt to give it a try. If your body is not ready, nothing will happen. With DD, my Dr. swept my membranes at my 39 week apt when I was 90% and ~2 cm. that was a Friday morning and she fully expected to see me that night. I didn't go the the hospital until Monday night when my water broke. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Won't do anything if your not ready.

I had mine stripped in almost the same circumstances last time. Labor began HARD within 12 hours, birth within 24. It's a more gentle way to encourage labor and much better than a "medical" induction. If I remember correctly you have some valid medical reasons for wanting to deliver sooner rather than later so I say go for it.

It's up to you. Something to note, though -- bloody show can often happen when intercourse or a vaginal exam have occurred, so it can be hard to say what caused what. According to Cochrane Collaberative, sweeping membranes is only effective in 1 out of 8 women. It sounds like youa re doing everything right and your body is accomodating. If it were me, I would probably just leave it alone -- every day in there makes your baby healthier and ready to be a better nurser.

I'd say go for it, I don't think it will put you in labor if baby isn't ready. Good luck!

I'm not a fan, personally.

BUT... I don't think it'll work unless your body is truly ready, so it likely won't hurt.

on that pineapple thing, though... you gotta eat like 7 in a day I've never met anyone who could get past 1 pineapple at a time.

I don't really like sweeps, but that's because my experience with them has just been cramping, some mess, and no labor.

I don't think it will bring on labor if your body isn't ready, but maybe it's all the push your body would need.
