Looking for a movie for a movie night.

I have 5 1/2 and a 3 1/2 year old boys. I am looking into having a family movie night. My boys are very skittish when it comes to tv and movies. They do not watch tv at home, but have seen some shows while at other peoples houses. They attempt to watch movies too at other houses, but are afraid after two minutes and they have to leave.
Animation seems to bother them the most, but I am still open to it.
Please no Disney.
What are your suggestions for a family friendly G movie.

The Children of Noisy Village is the most gentle/non-stressful movie I've ever seen. It's based on a wonderful series by Astrid Lindgrun (author of Pippi Longstocking). I don't think it's out on DVD and I had to order it from the library.

Re: Looking for a movie for a movie night.

When you say they are skittish after 2 minutes of a movie, do you mean they get too wiggly to pay attention or they are actually afraid of watching movies?

If it is the former, I'd suggest a very high interest movie that lines up with their interests. If you post their interests, I'm sure we can recommend movies.

If it is the latter, I'd recommend talking to someone to find out what is going on.

Some movies my kids love:
Pete's Dragon (this IS Disney, but not typical animation)
Yellowstone Cubs (also Disney, but very old Wonderful World of Disney type, not animated)
Annie
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (either version)
E.T. (although for a while we only watched up to ToTing)
Toy Story (Pixar, but related to Disney)
Any of the Buddies movies (about dogs)
Milo and Otis
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Babe
Muppets
Fern Gully
Charlotte's Web

Re: Looking for a movie for a movie night.

Oh Oh, Milo and Otis! Super cute, live action, all animals, not Disney.

If your kids are actually getting scared at many movies, I do not recommend Spooky Buddies. My almost 4 yr old loves dogs, but the beginning of the movie involves a large black dog, lots of black smoke around him and his eyes glow. Totally freaked her out and we couldn't finish it. For that matter, I recommend staying away from almost anything Halloween related.

However, Santa Buddies is pretty cute. I think all the Buddies movies are Disney.

Gosh, I love kids movies, but now I am drawing a blank!

No, they can stay seated, but they are easily spooked. I think the movie UP was on at a party we were at and they were asking them people to shut it off. I think that it happened once during sesame street at a relatives house.

I haven'y brought it up with the doc, b/c I mean I do not want to force TV on them. We have one old tv in our home (with antenna) in the basement to watch news if DH and I want to catch something, but the kids are mainly screen free. So maybe just lack of exposure to visuals (not just out of books and their imagination) is causing it. This is why I want to start having a movie night about once a month.

I never thought about all the oldies but goodies, like mary poppins and even annie......and ohhhh how I loved chitty chitty bang bang!!!!!
This may bring back such great memories!!!

Thank you all!!!!!!

I would recommend re-watching some of the oldies before you have a movie night. My 5 year old is terrified of any bad guys, even the silly ones. The child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang gave him nightmares and the chase and bolshevik scenes in Annie are pretty scary. Plus, I had to spend about an hour discussing bolsheviks with my 7 year-old.

Too bad you vetoed disney, Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro are two great Studio Ghibli movies. Super cute and not as scary as 101 Dalmatians. My DS yells at Cruella and the bad guys. I do wish you would reconsider Ponyo, it is super cute.

What is wrong with Disney? Ponyo is a great movies, all 4 of mine love it.

The Lorax is our movie for tomorrow night. I guess I don't have any suggestions b/c we love Disney movies, lol.
