Homemade laundry detergent didn't gel...

What did I do wrong? I did 1/2 c Borax 1 cup washing soda and instead of Fels Naptha I used Kirks castile. I had read you could do that. I grated and melted the soap in 4 c water then filled the bucket half full of water. Poured in the melted soap and then added the Borax and washing soda. Stirred and added water to fill bucket. Covered and let sit overnight. It was still watery the next day. I stirred it and then covered it again. Today it had a sort of thick web like looking white but when I stirred it was still mostly water. Can I fix it or do I have to through it out? Thats not saving. What did I do wrong?

I haven't made the liquid version but for my powder I use equal parts borax and washing soda. Maybe that is the problem? I use 1 cup of each

Re: Homemade laundry detergent didn't gel...

When I research it I saw the recipe both ways. So I don't know.

Mine didn't gel either. I wasn't impressed and didn't end up using it. We have hard water and I just don't know if that bucket of slimey stuff could possibly do the job.....

I haven't made liquid, I use powdered. I also use equal parts and it does a fantastic job. Plus it takes up so much less space and I only need a couple tbsp.

When I added the water into the bucket my recipe didn't say it had to be hot water. I wonder if that is the problem. Did you put hot water into the bucket. The only water that I used that was hot was the water that I mekted the soap in.

We also have Super hard water.

Thats kinda weird that the same recipe will gel sometimes and then not gel sometimes. I wonder if the hard water effects it? I wonder if I could reboil it?
