Re: I wanna know- What DON'T you let your kids watch????

My kids are pretty limited too but in a weird way. We mostly watch PBS but no Barney, Thomas or Cailou. I always thought Barney was stupid and Thomas and Cailou are whiny. There is no Sponge Bob or anything similar in this house. My boys can watch Anime and movies up to a PG13 rating if I have seen them and think they are ok. So yeah I'm a bit odd.

Re: I wanna know- What DON'T you let your kids watch????

She is allowed to watch Yo Gabba Gabba when I'm in the shower and DH isn't home.
I introduced her to Veggie Tales the other day when we were on a very long all day drive.

I cannot say much about what I have 'banned' as I've pretty much banned any and all other watching (she did watch Finding Nemo when we were riding in a friend's car and her child has to have tv in the car *eyeroll* )

I am very much opposed to:
-Spongebob
-any show where the parents are shown as idiots
-any show where the characters are whiney

At other people's houses, I have seen snippets of that one where all the characters are shaped like their words with letters and stuff. I think I would allow that one later once I am open to more tv watching.

A friend of mine posted photos of her 2 children watching Spongebob for the first time the other day. Both toddlers were slackjawed and wide eyed.. staring mindlessly at it. Most of the friends posted that they loved how Spongebob did that to their kids. There was a tiny debate as to the study regarding that show (and shows like it) but mostly everyone said that it was stupid to care and the show was funny.

We have cut down on a LOT of tv shows for the kids but they absolutely cannot watch spongebob or phineas and ferb. Mostly they watch ondemand Berenstain Bears, Schoolhouse Rock, Care Bears Veggie Tales and then the movies we have. DH is more lenient on what cartoons he turns on, because he likes to watch cartoons too so they watch some Transformers, GI Joe, Avatar.

We don't allow spongebob or really anything on the disney channel or nick channels...we do allow most of the shows on nick jr and sprout...pbs kids for the most part. We screen everything first and have taught our kids what is appropraite or not for our family and they will come tell us if a show has something bad in it and we can mark it off the list. Seems like today its almost safer and better for kids to just watch pre-approved dvds instead of having open air tv......*sigh*

Re: I wanna know- What DON'T you let your kids watch????

We don't have cable and our kids watch maybe 30-40 minutes of TV per month, if that. So my opinions may not be super valid

The only thing I allow without my DH or myself prescreening it is VeggieTales. The veggies haven't let us down yet.

Even G-Rated movies can get really inappropriate. We let DS1 watch All Dogs Go to Heaven without prescreening it a year or so ago and oh. my. goodness. There's gambling, revenge, assassination, fighting, and so much other bad stuff. Yikes! There was a lot of fast forwarding. Since that night, I pre-screen anything my kids watch, even if it seems innocent.

We only do Netflix and DVDs. We are also anti-Spongebob. Usually we keep to PBS/learning shows, or DD can also choose My Little Pony--not my fave but I allow it-- Dragon Tales, a few others I can't think of right now...or a Disney movie. We have banned certain shows, like Horseland and a few others, because of the language (using the phrase "I hate you" or otherwise insulting each other). She usually gets stuck on a certain thing and watches it over & over, so that kind of keeps the debating to a minimum.

Re: I wanna know- What DON'T you let your kids watch????

I don't mind most of the preschool type nickelodeon shows - some are annoying, but not damaging, so I pretty much let her watch what she likes on treehouse and nick jr, or did when we had such things. I loathe spongebob, and there are some shows that I've seen peicemeal that are needlessly destructive, violent or idiotic that I won't let her watch either, however we only have netflix and other streaming stuff, so I'm very much in control of what she watches.

Mostly I just keep her from watching the adult shows that we enjoy. We're big fans of crime type shows and supernatural stuff, adn that's just too scary/gruesome for her.

Re: I wanna know- What DON'T you let your kids watch????

My DD is too young for television, but I need to ask what's wrong with phineaus and ferb? I've seen it a few times (before having a child mind you) and it didnt seem bad.
