How long did your child need to wear trainers?

How long did your child wear trainers and then transition into regular underwear?

We never wore trainers. Just went straight to underwear.

About 2 days. My kids realized very quickly that they were not 'real' underwear and would not wear them.

Underwear just isn't practical for outings. A puddle in the middle of the grocery store is very inconvenient. Fortunately, I had a prefold in my bag to wipe up the floor. DD won't use public toilets. She prefers the toilet at home or the little toilets at daycare. I can barely convince her to use her portable potty that I set up in the back of the car. When conditions are just right, like when we stay home, we can go most of the day without accidents.

I have potty trained 4 of my 5 and never owned a trainer or pull up. My 5th is only 20 months but I don't see methods changing for him.

Most kids who use trainers treat them like a diaper and it is just an expensive way to continue diapering. If you jump right to underwear they "get it" faster and it saves the expense of trainers. Like pp said if I can't trust they won't pee in public wearing underwear I just don't go or I diaper if I have no choice. A lot of times if they know how to hold it, the diaper will still be dry when you get home. It's just good insurance jic.

Staying home to potty train is not an option. Besides, she's got potty training down just fine at home. I have things to do and we must go out on the weekends. Isn't it more confusing to go back and forth between diaper and underwear? I suppose I'll just carry lots more prefolds and changes of clothes when we go out.

If she has it down it shouldn't be. I guess it could depend on the kid. A trainer is just a thin diaper and most kids use them as diapers so you end up going through more of them and changes of clothes anyway because a trainer won't hold like a diaper. If you think they will work for you then get some but so far everyone who has answered has managed without. It isn't a big deal one way or another. It it my experience that trainers hold up progress of fully training vs getting wet from accidents.

We usually kept a potty in our truck to make it easier because a lot of places had auto flush toilets and those are scary when they go off with a small kid on them and it saved use the possible gross conditions of some public restrooms. Maybe this is an option for you?

Mine wore trainers for at least 3 months, especially for bed and outings. Not waterproof though...just underwear with a little padding just to catch the beginning of an accident if needed.
