Reflux worse on Nutramigen??
Our dr. just switched my 3 1/2 mo. old from Gentlease to Nutramigen on Friday, because his spitting up and crying while eating has been getting worse. Since the switch, the spitting up has been even worse still.
Has anyone had this experience? Just wondering if it's normal to get worse before it gets better on Nutramigen. Thanks

Re: Reflux worse on Nutramigen??
I'd see about getting a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Generally reflux doesn't get worse before getting better when there is a switch. We noticed an automatic improvement when we put DD on Nutramigen for silent reflux. It's possible he may need meds or a adifferent special formula. Some babies with reflux do better on liquid formula. I have heard a lot of them doing extremely well on Alimentum liquid formula. Maybe go buy a bottle and give it a shot while waiting for an appointment. But definitely push for a referral.

Re: Reflux worse on Nutramigen??
hmmm...he has been on zantac for almost 2 months too. they did an ultrasound of his belly before prescribing that and didn't see anything troubling. i called the dr. this morning and they said it could take 5-7 days to see improvement. he's got a horrible diaper rash from it too now:-(

Re: Reflux worse on Nutramigen??
That sounds like he's allergic to something in it. Try Alimentum RTF. I've heard some babies do much better on it. Otherwise he may need elecare or something else more hypoallergenic. Maybe check about seeing another doctor. That doctor doesn't seem to know what he's talking about, especially if a baby gets worse on it and develops a rash. Sometimes reflux is due to an allergy rather than a stomach issue.
Oh, here's a good guide on allergies and intolerance to formula: Link

Re: Reflux worse on Nutramigen??
thanks for that link. he's not following normal patterns though because really the only time he's fussy is when he's eating. probably 5 of 7 feedings a day he's fighting us. spitting up tons, lots of it is mucousy or chunky. poop looks fine but frequent. rash now has some open spots
i've been giving him some naked time today to try to help with that. i appreciate your input
