Does anyone elses toddler takes toys to bed?

I can't remember exactly when we started this, but I'd say it was around 18 - 20 months or so (DS is now 2 yrs 1 mo for reference). He still sleeps in a crib for what it's worth.

He used to be a great bed time kiddo, we've had basically the same routine since he was very young with only minor alterations to time and schedule as he got older. Then he started being a real bear about bed, lots of tears, wailing, the works. I started letting him pick out one toy to take to bed with him, and over time it's progressed and he'll pick out a few toys. Most days I don't clean the whole crib out so he'll have multiple toys in there along with all his stuffed animals.

We didn't allow him to sleep with ANYTHING - including stuffed animals or a blanket - until he was 15 months. I remember because I was terrified the first night he had a blanket and "stuffie."

He picks out the most random toys some nights. For example, the other night, he took a toy car and a shoe from one of his build a bears which was in the living room. Other nights he'll take something more substantial like a toy musical instrument, or some little people and one of the little people mobiles (such as the bus). There hardly seems to be room in there for him to sleep, but he likes it all in there.

Sometimes when he goes to bed, I can hear him playing for a half hr, sometimes it's as long as 2 hours later that he's still playing. He doesn't cry or pout, he picks out his toys and runs back there.

My mom said she thinks I should just let him stay up and play as long as he wants, since he's not tired. But honestly DH works nights and I'm pregnant with #2, so I'm loving this quiet playtime in his crib when he eventually goes to sleep on his own. On the VERY rare occasion, DH has mentioned that sometimes when he comes home at about 4am from work he has heard DS playing in his crib when he comes down the hallway. But that is very rare.

Thoughts? For what it's worth, I steer him towards what seem to be safer toys, and he still sleeps with the angel care sensor pad, so I know he hasn't choked to death on a toy or something.

My DD does the same thing I've never worried about it, though I often sneak toys and books out of the crib once she falls asleep.

No, they do sleep with their lovies though. They are too young to stay up for an hour past their bedtime or *I* pay for it the next day so I do not allow toys in bed. They will occasionally sneak them and I go in and take them away.

Not toys but a billion stuffed animals. Although my 4 year old slept with her new shoes awhile back.

My dd is only 12m, and doesn't sleep in a crib, but that sounds like a great set up to me! If it isn't making for an overtired baby the next day, I wouldn't change a thing!

My son slept with an unopened (and sealed) container of Orville Redenbacher popcorn for a few nights. He was so excited that I bought it. He has always slept with weird things - no biggie here.

My kids are 3 and 2, and besides stuffed animals, we try to avoid going to bed with toys. They do ask, though! They usually settle on leaving it on the table in the bedroom so they can grab it first thing in the morning.

Re: Does anyone elses toddler takes toys to bed?

Both my boys have slept with strange things over the years. Now I'm happy that my youngest (7) just sleeps with his "babies" at night. Oldest (9) stopped a couple years ago.

I don't think it's a big deal, as long as they get the sleep that they need. When they were younger, I didn't worry as much b/c they still took naps & weren't in school & we did nap time. I imagine things like that work for kids the same as adults - sometimes you just can't get to sleep, & I'd rather DS be playing with a toy or two than being unhappy in his own room/bed/crib. But if you feel like it's an issue that needs changing, you're the mom & I'd go with your gut.
