I'm ready to try potty training.. need advice on how to start.

I'm ready to try to start potty training with DS3, about 2 years 3months old.

DS1 was almost 4 when he PTed so it was really easy and took 3 days.

I don't even remember how he started with DS2, just that he was about 2 1/2, really stubborn and it was a long process.

I'm ready to start with DS3, but I'm not sure HOW to start. If he's no wearing a diaper, he will pee everywhere. But he has never pooped on the floor. He'll hold poop in until I put a diaper on him, and then suddenly fills it.

Also, if he's naked, he'll follow me around and randomly lay down on the floor in front of me, wanting me to put a diaper on him.

So.... where do I start? Suggestions on HOW to start?

Thanks
God bless!

I just potty trained my youngest, a couple weeks ago. We stayed at home for a week. No diapers. Absolutely no pullups. Just straight to panties. Every 30 mins we would head to the bathroom. Little by little we went longer times. She did fantastic.

Re: I'm ready to try potty training.. need advice on how to start.

Basically you start taking them every 30 minutes to the potty for a few days, then 1hr, 1.5hr, 2hrs etc. And then you simply start asking them if they have to go and if not just take them every 2hrs. You give them lots of praise whenever they do make in the potty and whenever there is an accident act like it's no big deal. Have them help you clean it up and say 'we'll get it in the potty next time'. Before you know it accidents will be farther and farther apart! My son is under 2 and not very vocal so I did have to look at clues that he has to go too. Hope that helps and good luck

Re: I'm ready to try potty training.. need advice on how to start.

I just blogged about my experience training my 2 yr 3 month old We did the three day potty training method and I HIGHLY recommend it. The past 3 days he's been at preschool for 8 hours and has only had one accident. He's also staying dry through the night and naps. http://stephbrownthinks.blogspot.com...-training.html

Edit: whoops, just noticed this was an old thread

Re: I'm ready to try potty training.. need advice on how to start.

It went GREAT! I really can't recommend that method enough. When we started he didn't seem ready at all, but I figured I could try it for 3 or 4 days and if he didn't get it by the end I'd just put it on hold. Its a positive program so I didn't worry about traumatizing him He goes to a Montessori preschool/daycare program 3 days a week for 8 hours a day while I work and has only had ONE accident there and that was the first day after potty training. He's now telling us when he needs to go and running in the bathroom, stays dry all night, and only has the occasional pee accident when he's doing something really fun and forgets (like playing at the beach). Good luck! If you do try this method just be prepared that the first few days are really emotionally exhausting

Good advice! I'm about to start with my 21 month old. Hoping it takes! He's my first child so this is all foreign to me.
