If you had GD were you induced?

I've been reading at BC and it seems like EVERYONE is induced. Is this really the norm? My MWs have not said a word about having to be induced. I'd REALLY like to avoid an induction this time around.

I had GD my last pregnancy and induction was never mentioned. Mine was controlled with diet and Glyburide twice a day. My numbers were never out of control. I have GD this one also and won't be induced unless my numbers are out of control.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

I had GD with 1 (of 5) children and contrlled it completely with diet and exercise. If my numbers were high, I would head out the door and start walking. My Dr never mentioned induction. I was SUPER careful about what I ate - I rarely went over my carb intake for my meals and snacks and I kept strict record of my numbers.

I saw a specialist that helped me with my diet and she figured the baby would be 8 1/2 lbs. Well, DD1 was 3 days early and was 7lbs 4oz. Next time I didn't have GD and my DS was 9lb 4oz. Go figure.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

My cousin had GD with all three of her pregnancies, and was induced between 35 and 37 weeks all three times. The main reason was because the babies were already getting too big. Her smallest was 8 lbs at 35 weeks.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

I was told that i'd only be given a "few days" past my due date and then they'd induce me. I was diet and exercise controlled. I would/did also have to go for NST on/after my due date. Luckily, on my due date (my last doc appt with a NST) i was already in labour and had DD early the next morning. She was exact same weight 7lbs 13 oz as her older brother (with whom i did NOT have GD) and 1 inch shorter than him.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

Check out the blog Evidence Based Birth. There are a few posts there about the evidence, or lack thereof, for inducing most women with GD.
I've known several women who were induced, and one who wasn't. All of them had smallish babies, and most had c-sections. One of my mom's good friends was induced because they were afraid that her baby was going to be big, but she ended up being less than 6 pounds! (still had a c-section, though, for FTP). Even now that child is tiny.
If your blood sugar levels have been controlled, there is NO reason to be induced just because you have GD. You really should be treated like any other low-risk mom, imo.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

Nope. My midwife had me checking my blood sugars daily... once in the morning, and then before and after every meal. We kept it under control with diet, and we kept the blood pressure under control with bed rest and medication. So I was able to avoid an induction.

She basically did everything she could to AVOID an induction. Don't get me wrong, she wouldn't have hesitated to send me to her OB for induction if she felt it was what was best for Bella and me... but she would rather avoid inductions when possible. And I think that's a big difference between a lot of midwifes and a lot of OBs.

God bless!

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

I had extreme GD with DS2 (like my initial test result was so high they wouldn't even do the 3hr)...I went a week past due and my water broke on its own. I had it with DS3 also, but not as bad and still went into labor on my own at 39 weeks. Induction was never even discussed either time

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

I have been induced all 4times. However, I am on insulin and often have other complications. I would not go for an induction just for diet controlled GD...really no need.

Re: If you had GD were you induced?

I was diet controlled with my first. Induction was never mentioned even once. However, I did deliver at 39wks 1 day. I have no clue if they would have tried to induce if I'd gone "over."

I can understand being nervous about it.
