What style of shoulder on a ring sling?

I see so many options for how the shoulder of a ring sling can be. Padded, unpadded, gathered, pleated, ect.... it just runs the gamet. What seems to be the most comfortable? Any one have pics or links to help me understand what you are saying. I've never had one, but my SIL is moving closer to me and I may be watching her kids in the evenings when I"m home from work and she's out doing photo shoots, so I would kind of like a sling for her NB that is due this fall. Ideas? Thoughts, comfy is important!

Re: What style of shoulder on a ring sling?

Pleated shoulders are the easiest for new sling users, because the pleats automatically spread the shoulder fabric for you. A gathered shoulder lets you have more control over how much you spread out the fabric, but as a new sling user there are so many other variables in play (ring position, baby's position, tightness, spread across back, etc.) that it's nice to have one less thing to worry about. My personal favorite is the eesti shoulder, it is a combination of pleats and gathers. But lots of people like Sakura bloom slings, which are fully gathered. I really think you'll be fine with pleated, gathered, or a combination; they are all very comfy. I'd probably avoid a centerfold, hotdog, accordian, or other shoulder style.
As far as padding goes, I would generally say that unpadded shoulders are best. The only padded shoulder that I would recommend is the Maya wrap, it is lightly padded and works well for many people. Definitely avoid padded rails, though. They make the sling harder to adjust and don't add anything in terms of comfort.

Here I was expecting gathered to be the most comfy! Pleated surprises me but that's why I asked because I just have no clue!

Pleated and unpadded. Sleeping baby productions makes awesome and reasonably priced ones. I'm in love with mine from her!

Eesti!! It is pleated on the sides and gathered in the middle. The best of both worlds. I did love my pleated...until I tried eesti and I will never go back lol.

The only shoulder I can tolerate for any period of time is the pleated SBP (sleeping baby productions), but many also like the Estie style.

Pleated and unpadded; I recommend Sakura Bloom slings. The linen and silk are both excellent from Sakura Bloom.

I liked the look of the Maya sling but I HATED the padded shoulder.

you can view helpful videos that explain correct shoulder placement here
