Harvesting Gourds?

We have a TON of gourds growing. I have read that your not supposed to pick them till the vine has died down, ours are fully green the leaves are starting to brown though. My question is is it okay to pick them now? ..here in KY it is starting to snow and some are rotting.

I read from an amish site to cut, leaving plenty of the stem. This is our first year. Are they getting soft or something? While they dry, the very outer flesh will mold and get nasty looking, just part of the process. Then you wash, soak in a bleach solution, and sand.

HTH.

A few have totally rotted. I turned them hoping that would help? They are growing on the ground and bugs and such like to make a home under some.
