SO Ways to keep a thermos/food jar hot

I pack leftovers nearly everyday for my son. When I ate lunch with him the other day I noticed that the food was not warm at all that I packed. That day I didn't pack as much so the thermos was only 1/3 full, I'm sure that had something to do with it.

I usually put hot water in the thermos for 10 min. I cook the food so it is super hot and then put it in the thermos. We use a stainless thermoses. I wish there was a coozie that you put around pop cans for a jar thermos. Something to help keep the heat in.

He does have cold items in a different pocket but same lunch bag. Not an ice pack but his drink thermos stays in the fridge overnight and there is fruit from the fridge in that compartment.

Anything else to help keep it hot?

Is the water boiling when it goes into the thermos? Not filling up the thermos would affect how hot the food stays.

Fill it with boiling water all the way to the top and make sure the food is really hot when you put it in there. Also you could fashion some sort of "cozy" out of fabric really/

I pack soup for my husband in his thermos by pre-heating it with boiling water, and making sure the soup is boiling.....and filling it. I pack it at 7am and there are times when he doesn't eat until 4, and is is still hot.

I have done the same as the pps. DD eats at 11:30. She came home with half her soup one day because she ran out of time. It was TOO hot at lunch time still. I still boil her soup, but only use hot tap water now. And we fill it most of the way to the top.

Ok. It must either be having cold items not far enough away from the hot or that I didn't have a full thermos that day. Thanks!
