Tofu?

I watch my 13 month old nephew while my sister works and she asked me about giving him tofu? Do any of you know if it's ok to introduce now and ways to introduce it?

TIA
Christina

Tofu is soy. And therefore, I would personally avoid large quantities for children. It's just too controversial.

Re: Tofu?

No reason not to. It is a soy product and if there are no soy allergies I wouldn't worry. I give it to my 13 month old. We're vegetarian so have it occasionally, it isn't a huge component of our diet and we don't do soy milk, so I have no problem with giving some as part of a varied diet.

Re: Tofu?

My boys have been eating tofu since they were about 6 1/2 months old. They are 7 months now. They love it. I think it's fine and you can always get non-GMO, organic tofu. Both my doctor and our pediatrician says that the amount of soy you'd have to eat to have hormonal consequences is really high, so we are comfortable with giving tofu to our babies, but it is up to each family of course. We usually get the kind that is lightly fried first so it's easier to grab and doesn't fall apart as easily, but this probably isn't an issue for older babies that can pick up small pieces.

Tofu is unfermented soy, so I would NOT give it to my children. The only kind of soy that anyone should be consuming is fermented.

We give it as a first food here too, no adverse affects noted.

Re: Tofu?

It was one of DD's favorite first foods. Now at 2 yrs old, she loves all my tofu dishes:miso soup with chunks of tofu, edamame, and tofu in a clear pork broth soup with glass noodles.

Re: Tofu?

Thanks for all the comments! The tofu she got for me to give him is organic. I have hime about 4 or 5 small pieces yesterday with his lunch and he loved it. We're going slow introducing it to make sure everything goes ok. He doesn't eat any other soy foods. As of now, he'll eat soy 2-3 time a week to see how it goes.
