How long for the milk to dry up? Was it painful?

Depends on wan, for both questions. How many times were you nursing?

That depends on a lot of factors. DD weaned at 3 so there wasn't really any milk left. No pain there! Gradual weaning is best if possible for both your comfort and to prevent clogged ducts/mastitis. If you cut down slowly on feedings then there should be very little pain involved.
