Re: List of books your children love
I don't honestly read all of the books my kids read anymore, just mostly the ones that Tharen reads because though he is more than capable of reading alone he won't. Kearnan reads by himself and has vastly different preferences than I do.
Kearnan is 11 and he likes fantasy books and books based off of characters he likes. He is a bit behind in his reading abilities (he reads well but his comprehension is behind) because he is ASD. Some of his favorite books to read to himself have been How to Train Your Dragon(the entire series) Odd and The Frost Giant My Father's Dragon (the series) The Magic Tree House (series) I have read many of these and they are simple and would be good for book reports and for deeper research on history topics or science topics depending on which book you chose. Pirates of the Caribbean novelization (he's read all of them) Yu-Gi-Oh manga if you are not familiar with manga or yu-gi-oh familiarize yourself before allowing your child to read it. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle manga this one is even a bit darker than Yu-Gi-Oh and probably better for older kids. We are manga and anime fans so Kearnan reads a good bit of manga. Two Lumps web comic (it is a book of comic strips) some of the humor is a bit off color but it is funny, sort of Garfield-esque. This is not all Kearnan reads, he reads all of the time. Sometimes he just pulls the "early readers" like Dr Seuss or Sam The Seal off of the shelf and reads them to himself or out loud to his brother or his toys. He loves to read. But these are the books that he seems to focus on. Tharen is 6.5 and just started 2nd grade. When I tested his reading level at the end of 1st grade he had a high 3rd grade comprehension and high 4th grade phonetics. All that said he also can't sit still for very long so he doesn't like to read for very long and prefers to be read to. When he does read he chooses things that focus on characters he likes or classics Hello Kitty Scooby Doo Little Bear Frog and Toad Skippy Jon Jones Care Bears Pretty much anything he can read quickly and move on because he can't hold still for more than 10minutes at a stretch even though he can read. He loves to have me read picture books, fairy tales and novels to him though. We just finished the Harry Potter books again and now we are reading Neil Gaiman's Grave Yard Book.

Re: List of books your children love
I second the Magic Treehouse series. DS is 6.5yrs old but reads on a 2nd-3rd grade level and these books are perfect for him. We read them aloud so that dd can hear the stories as well.
We also love the Ready Freddy, Flat Stanley, and Nate the Great books. These are all series, but we also read books that aren't part of a series.

Re: List of books your children love
We recently got into Skippjon Jones with my 4 and 22 month old. Hilarious series. I love the "spanish" accent parts, the introduction to a few "real" spanish words and some made up and the creativity. (might I note that I am hispanic and am not the least bit offended by it because it is done respectfully).
My 4 year old has been reading a manga series with her dad called "Chi." It is about a cat that gets lost from his mother and is taken in by a family. The story so far has been humorous (involving a cat not using the litter box) but not great from an adult perspective. We are otherwise stuck in "princess" land with the 4 year old so we only read princess stories... :P

We too just LOVE SkippyJohn Jones! He is too adorable and the storries are well written inho. The boys both love them. Now the new book we just bought is very long. The pics are wonderfull and follow right along. Cayden is 7 and get very frustrated with seeing load s of words, so we takeit in steps with him. They are just wonderfull adventures.
I enjoy them as well, lol. Lots of fun singing and such as well.

My toddler LOVES the Baby Bug magazine. Also the "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" books.
My DS as a young elementary student loved those Ready Freddy book series. As a tween he's really liked the 39 Clues series. |
