How do I know if my (RF) carseat can touch the seat in front of it?

Hello car seat gurus! My question: how do I know if my rear facing carseat can touch the seat in front of it? Does it matter if it is lightly touching versus bracing? Is there a general rule?

My car is a 1996 Audi wagon, and the car seat is the new peg convertible (awesome, by the way). In the center (where it is currently), it doesn't touch anything. But if it is in one of the outboard positions, it lightly touches the headrest on the front seat.

I read through the manual for the carseat and the vehicle, and neither mention anything about this. I've heard this issue mentioned occasionally on ds, so i thought I'd ask the experts. Will need to know for install of a second rf seat in same car, and for rf install in crew cab truck (small space, so would probably also lightly touch).

Thanks so much!

We just bought a Graco My Size 70 and it said in the manual for it not to touch the front seat. I'm guessing it should say in your car seat manual.

To my knowledge the only one that can touch is the Sunshine Kids Radian (or whatever their new name is). I called the company (number is usually on the seat) and a car seat installer specialist told me that me that.It was a few years ago though,so other might be able to now.

Can you remove the headrest if it can't touch?

If the manual doesn't mention touching, I would assume it is okay. I wouldn't assume bracing is. Your car won't prohibit it, because it's not new enough to have advanced airbags.

Thanks for all your responses, ladies! Sounds like it is a car seat /vehicle combo specific thing? I too was assuming if the manual doesn't mention it, light touching is ok. I've never had a new car (or a new-ish one, lol). What is the deal with "advanced" airbags and carseats that you reference?

Advanced airbags rely on sensors in the passenger seat to determine if they should deploy, and with how much force, based on the weight of the person sitting there. A car seat touching or braced on the back can throw them off and cause them to malfunction.

Diono seats can touch, IF the car allows it as well :-)

. The car seat and the car have to agree. If the car says no, then the answer is no.
