Don't care if parents do well child visits. Now if their child was seriously ill with something other than a simple virus and they didn't take their kid in, then I'd care. And probably call FACS.

dd is almost 3, born at home and never been to a dr. i just see no reason to take her in unless she was sick enough to require medical attention. only ds1 has had a sick visit and that was when he was 7 for an ear infection. most things the dr really cant treat unless abx are needed

I never miss a wellness visit but not my business what others do.

Re: What do you think of moms who...

Since I am a first time momma, I personally feel better going to scheduled well visits because I like knowing she is "on track" and we fully vax, but it it is just that . . . a personal choice.

Then again, I don't really have much of a "choice" because well visits are pretty much required because DD qualifies for state medicaid since we are a one (fairly low) income family.

What I thought would probably depend on why they don't and who the parent/child was. My sister didn't take my niece while she had her, but it was not because she thought it was unnecessary it was because she was neglectful and lazy and didn't have time to be bothered. I had a problem with that, but only because it was part of a bigger problem. Any of my friends that choose to skip well visits, I'd figure they have made an informed decision that they're unnecessary.

As for me I haven't chosen to vax yet. I'm still researching and trying to make a decision one way or the other but at the moment I'm not comfortable vaxing and she has always been healthy so I haven't felt it necessary to do well visits. I might schedule one somewhere around a year but unless I decide to vax her that will probably be the only one, if we do one then. We do have a Dr that will get her in the same day if needed though.

This is my thoughts too. I think it's good to go, because so many things can be caught early and dealt with. But if you don't want to, you don't have to. Just no crying later about why something wasn't caught sooner, KWIM? Since it was you (generally not specifically) choice not to go.

Truely it isn't any of my buisiness what other parents do.

I however go the well child checks. i like to know they are growing and gaining weight ect. Our well visits are way longer than 5 min. She talks about not only DD but also make sure I am doing okay and listens to my concerns.

I completely agree. My kids are fully vaxed and we do all our well baby checks. They did have a simple blood draw (finger stick) to check iron levels at 9 months I think.

For the most part if parents don't want to then that's there choice, but as a speech therapist, I've come across a handful of children who were either medically neglected and their undetected sicknesses affected their growth/development, or children who were delayed and did not get early intervention services because no one took them to a doctor regularly.

Did you know that it is normal for babies and toddlers to be bowlegged, then for early school aged children to be knock kneed until around age 8? The abdomin is inspected for hernias. Outie belly buttons are often hernias and can go unnoticed by parents who have no clue or understanding of them. This is just off the top of my non-medical head.

I know about the legs. But if I didn't and it concerned the parent I would think they would take the little one into the doctor. Otherwise not treating it woldn't be any different than what the doctors would do.

The hernias also go untreated unless they are causing pain. My youngest has a herniated belly button. We were told to do nothing unless it caused pain. We were told it usually resolved itself as baby grew older. I am pretty sure even uneducated parents know to do something when children have severe abdominal pain.

I do take my kids in but only so I have a doctor available if I need him/her. It is hard to get into a doctor quickly if you are not already established. The issues you mentioned would not make me feel the need to go if we were not already going.

Re: What do you think of moms who...

We don't do well visits either...
to be honest neither of the two GP's we've had has ever really talked to me about them or tried to schedule them. (In Canada kids don't see a ped unless they need a consult because ped are considered specialists here.)

My kids are vaxed on a delayed schedule at the health unit. The nurse does a height and weight check when she does it. So they are seen more by a nurse until they turn 2.5 then we only see the Dr if we NEED them. That being said some of my kids have been seen weekly or more in their lives so I don't feel AT ALL like they are neglected medically since we see the Dr's A LOT.

ETA - Well checks here are height, weight, eyes, ears, tummy probe with fingers and throat inspection. There IS NO blood work, blood pressure (unless you happen to have a Dr with a pediatric cuff), urine samples or anything else on healthy kids.

ALSO - To address a PP - I am going to guess that most people who think their child might be behind are going to schedule an appointment to check. When I have concerns we would NEVER just wait. Maybe I am different though - do some people just wait??? My kids have several medical issues so I don't ever take a wait and see approach.
