Labrynthitis Anyone?
Anyone develop Labrynthitis after a cold with moderate to severe vertigo? I've been suffering from this for almost three weeks now, and my doc said it could last up to 8 weeks. In some cases, if it hasn't cleared up by 2 months, there could be permanent damage to the inner ear. I'm freaking out! I hope this doesn't last forever. It's miserable! Please someone tell me they've had this and it turned out okay?

Re: Labrynthitis Anyone?
Yep, I did a few years ago. Never heard of it before or since until now. The first few weeks were aweful, and then I slowly started noticing the vertigo less and less until I finally sat up one day and realized it was gone.

Re: Labrynthitis Anyone?
I have bengin vertigo (ie...no real cause, no cure just deal with it). Ginger pills work miracles.

Have yourself checked for migrainous vertigo. I went 15 years with what I thought was BPV, but turned out to be totally treatable vertigo migraines!

Try some benedryl. It really helps vertigo.
My daughter has a vertigo disorder of childhood with cyclic vomiting. Benedryl has saved our lives. There are also rx meds that can help. Meclizine and periactin. Both are antihistimines and can lesson symptoms. They can make you tired though.

I have been prescribed meclizine, but it offers no relief. It has gone away and come back a few times now, but I am ready for this to end. It's so exhausting! I can't carry my two yr old, because I'm afraid ill drop him. I have a hard time washing my face or hair in the shower because I usually close my eyes, but it sends the world into a spin. I can't walk in a straight line-at all! I went to check the mail today, a 20ft trek across the street with nothing to hold onto, and ended up about five feet off to the left after just a few steps. I feel like I have no control over my body. It is affecting my mind, too. I am having difficulty concentrating and forming my thoughts into words. I'm scared, and upset that my doctor seemed to think its no big deal. I feel like I'm drunk all the time. It seems like the more I rest, the better I feel, but you mamas know how difficult that can be with kids.
Sorry to be so "woe is me", but this is absolutely the worst thing that has ever happened to me, and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I'm happy to hear this can go away completely; I think I googled myself into more panic! |

Re: Labrynthitis Anyone?
OMG!! I have only ever known one other person with it. My first bout put me in the hospital for a few days. I woke up and couldn't see the vertigo was so bad (only a blur of colors). It took me just under an hour to crawl fifteen feet to where I knew my phone was to call 911. After the initial few days it took a few weeks to not feel like I was on a ship, but the throwing up/loss of vision was over after about 3 days.
I pull to the left when I get it too - I think one of the doctors said that is the normal side you pull to. The medication did nothing at first, but as you start to get better it will help a lot. Ginger and normal stuff like that will do nothing though. It is horrible and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy either. It will go away completely, kind of... It takes weeks for the first bout, but I was told you can get other bouts in times of stress/sickness after you get it the first time. They do not last as long - days compared to weeks. I have had 3 more after the first one. None have hospitalized me and they have only lasted a few days and one was only for about half a day. It has been 5 years since this first happened.

Re: Labrynthitis Anyone?
Ginger works if you catch the attack at the beginning. Also almost any prescription antihitamine will help as well. Nothing gets rid of it but these things calm it. I have had it for 8yrs everyday to some extent. Some days I can't get out of bed and basically sedate myself, most days I function. On the plus side, the first year I had it I lost 50lbs of left over twin weight.
