How long does it take to get licensed to foster?

Hi all! My husband and I have signed up to foster, and we're having our first home visit next Tuesday. After that we'll schedule the office visit where they finger print. We plan on being pretty diligent with the classes, but I wanted to know how long it took you all that have been through this to get your first placement. People have been telling us about 6 months!!!

I think it really depends on your area and the level of need. My sis and bil went from their first class to kids in their house in under two months!

We started in May and got our license in October. Classes didn't start till August and were 9 weeks. We went through a private agency so it went fast. The other people that went through DCFS took a lot longer. They have a lot more cases and people to go through. It took them longer to set up home inspections and thing. We called and they were there the next week. We could have been licensed in 3 months. But took longer because we had to wait for the next round of classes.

The hardest part was waiting almost a year for a placement.

From first inquiry to license was about 8 months, to first placement 10 months, to first long term / forever placement 12 months.

For us, our orientation was late January and we got in on the next pride class and completed all the other requirements. We were licensed in late march. 2 months!

Re: How long does it take to get licensed to foster?

It took us a bit over 5 months from the first inquiry to being licensed. Unfortunately we then had to wait 7 months until we actually had a foster placement! We had many calls that didn't pan out. We've since had 5 placements in a year's time and in between placements have gone anywhere from 2 days - 2 months. We only take one gender, 1 or 2 at a time and only ages 0-3 though so we are more specific than most.

We're only going to take 0-3 as well. We really want to foster and not necessarily adopt. There seem to be not enough placements but then it takes forever to get a child in your home!

Re: How long does it take to get licensed to foster?

Hey mama! our county does it different than most, we just have one interview, one saturday preplacement class, and a home inspection then we are licensed. we have 2 years to complete 9 modules of training classes and then have a certain number of hours that need to be done per year after that. i had the paperwork sitting in our desk for probably close to a year but after our interview it was i think 2 or 3 months before we were licensed, but that was mostly scheduling problems. we got our first placement after a month of waiting, but again that was scheduling problems. as soon as we were actually available we started getting calls right away. lots of placements offered and we only are supposed to take one placement under 2, i have one dfs now and got a call for 2 girls the other day, one of which was almost 4. it is so dependent on your area.
