When you buy used diapers...

How do you wash them for the first time? I usually do an extra-long hot wash with bleach, but should I be doing a more complete strip? What do you do?

I do the same as you. If I notice a lot of bubbles in the rinse water I'll strip them by doing more hot rinses until no more bubbles are there.

I do a 140 degree prewash with dawn and washing soda(semi hard water). Then I do a 140 degree wash with 1/2 cup borax, 1/2 cup of washing soda, dawn dish soap and detergent, and 1/2 cup of oxyclean. I let the washer agitate to distribute and then stop the washer to let soak 6-8 hours in the washer over night. I resume the wash cycle in the morning. Then I follow with 2-3 140 degree rinses with the last rinse I add fabric softener. A total of 4 cycles prewash, wash, double rinse. Sometimes I do a third rinse if I notice a lot of bubbles. Since adding the washing soda I do notice a lot more suds than previously.

This is my normal diaper washing routine. It is also what I do with used diapers. Not much can survive a long hot soak. Both the hot water and the oxyclean are known to kill yeast as well.

How much Dawn do you use? I've always been afraid to use more than a tiny squirt.
