Cold meds while nursing???

I've got a doozy for a cold... Anything I can safely take for nasal congestion while nursing?

Every time I've asked the doctor or pharmacist, I've been told not to take cold meds. I like Simply Saline and I usually add some pure eucalyptus oil to my warm mist humidifier. Steamy showers, hot tea... Methods that we use with our babes when they are sick. It's no fun, but better to be safe.

How about the netty pot with distilled water? I know there was a big thing a few years ago about not using the right water

My birth center had a lactation consultant that told me that I could use the plain Mucinex, as it didn't have anything but guaifenesin, which is an expectorant.

If you really can't stop coughing, you can take Robitussin DM (not any other type). Things to try first:
Tablespoon of honey with tsp of cinnamon - just eat this every few hours - try to swish it around in your throat as you swallow.
Vicks Vapo-Rub on the soles of your feet, then socks. Seriously: I had bronchitis while pregnant and didn't sleep for three days because I was coughing so much. I got desperate after even the codiene syrup the Dr. prescribed didn't help. Did the Vicks thing and the coughing was gone within an hour and stayed away long enough for a full nights sleep.

My ped told me regular, plain Sudafed was OK (the nasal decon). I always got the store brand.

I know that Benadryl can affect your supply, but I had to take some one night this week because I could not go to sleep, I was so congested. That one time dose did NOT affect my supply and I would do it again if it meant getting some sleep. It's repeated dosing that will decrease your supply.

For nasal congestion I use store brand Afrin. Opens you up and does not effect my milk.
