crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
I was making crockpot yogurt today. I put the milk on low for 2.5 hours, shut it off and went ahead and put my yogurt starter in instead of waiting for 3 hours (I was distracted). Ugh. I probably killed the bacteria I needed? Any saving it or do i just need to wait and see after all the time has passed?

Re: crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
Wait and see
. You never know, those bacteria can be pretty hardy, and it would be a waste to throw it out now without seeing. You could add more starter just to be on the safe side, even now.

Re: crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
Thanks for the response.
I will wait and see what happens. I have an hour left of the '3 hour wait' before I was *supposed* to add the starter. I used the rest of my yogurt starter and I have napping kids, so can't run to the store to get more. I guess I will see this evening if it still worked. Hopefully it surprises me. I can't believe I messed it up.

I've done that. In my case it did kill the starter. Sorry.

Re: crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
yea.....let us know how it turns out. but i've found that any variation one way or the other, greater than 30 minutes, means it doesn't work. ie, 30 minutes before the 3hrs, it's too hot and kills the starter, 30 minutes after and it's too cold and the starter doesn't grow. within those time limits i'm usually ok, but too much variation and the temps just aren't right.

Re: crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
It was a fail. I will try it again over the weekend.

Re: crockpot yogurt, I messed up?
I tried crockpot yogurt once and it got completely messed up. I believe our house was too cold for the yogurt when I tried it. I like the glass jars & cooler method a LOT better. My yogurt actually comes out that way. Umm... I forget who posted her way of doing it on here before. MaBacon maybe?
