Proper way to use pins?

On my last post about Snappis vs other types of pinning, a lot of people said they preferred safety pins. That was a little surprising to me because I'm just so nervous to do that on my LO. But several people said if you do it the right way, there's no way to poke your LO. What is the right way? I would put the pin from the "in" side to "out" side but it could still theoretically come undone, couldn't it? If they roll or shift, couldn't it dislodge it from the cover? Oddly enough, my three year old managed to accidentally open a safety pin this morning and scratch herself (not on a diaper and not a specially made diaper safety pin).

I use the safety pins, but not how you probably assume.

I actually use them to hold my prefolds in a flat shape and lay it along the inside of my cover. I had too many prefolds unfold and come out of my diapers, and I care to wrap it around the baby.

Re: Proper way to use pins?

The diaper pin pins are made to lock so baby would have a hard time opening them. I pull the diaper tight make a fold or pinch and push the pin towards me not baby. I have managed to cut myself on them but then I also managed to nip the tip off of my finger using a new knife. I have never poked baby though.

Re: Proper way to use pins?

I pin railroad style, from left to right at baby's left side and left to right at baby's right side. However this is the wrong way to do it. You are supposed to pin so that the head of the pin (the end that opens) is toward the outside. This way if the pin were to inerrantly open, the sharp point is facing outward and not inward towards baby's tummy.

But for me I'm very right-handed and like to diaper from the side with baby's head at my left side. Thus, for me to pin away from my body instead of toward it is very awkward for me. I'm not good at it that way. So, I choose to do them in line, which makes the left side pin on "right" and the right side pin on "wrong". I always make sure the heads are locked (colored end pressed down) and I've never had a locking head pin come open on me.

So, pin how you feel comfortable and coordinated pinning and always make sure they are locked or otherwise on well. Keep pins sharp and lubricate them. I stick mine in a bar of Ivory soap and keep the paper cover on the soap so it does not dry out too quickly. Replace pins that are dull. Sharp pins slide better and are safer. Buy extra pins because sometimes pins are dull or become dull. It is possible to sharpen them but you'll spend more buying a sharpener than you would buying a whole lot of pins.

Pinning gives the best fit. Nothing beats a well-pinned diaper, IMO.

Re: Proper way to use pins?

I love Dritz and GMD pins with the locking heads so I think they would have a hard time opening them. When I pin my hand is between the fabric and the baby pulling it tight. So yes once or twice I have poked myself but it's not possible to poke the baby. I run it through my hair first so it slides through the fabric and I'm not pushing hard. I push until I feel the pressure, not the actual pin, then push up through the top and fasten/lock. I'm never pushing the pin through all the layers until it gets to the skin and again my hand is there anyway.

Re: Proper way to use pins?

Well, I don't know if there is a "right" way to pin. But to avoid poking your baby, your hand that isn't holding the pin is always slipped between baby and the diaper (pinching the two pieces together) in the direction the pin points so if it does poke all the way through the fabric (it doesn't have to, more like a dip into the fabric so it at least secures all the layers), then it would poke mom's fingers, not baby's skin.
I did this video a looong time ago...maybe it will help.
