I have been using Charlie's Soap for all of our laundry, including diapers. I know you said that you don't want to order online anymore, but I bought a huge bucket for about $100 on Amazon. It does 1000 loads of laundry so it's 10 cents a load- that seems like a really per load price to me and I don't have to worry about running to the store or messing with deals and coupons.

Borax and washing soda soften water so the detergent works better.

Would the same up and up free and clear fabric softener be ok for the cloth diapers as well?

I use whatever F&C I can get a good deal on. My favorite is All, then Arm n Hammer then Purex. Solo and Fab (really cheap options in my area) don't work quite as well IMO. I use like 3/4 of a capful in a HE toploader.
