any kindergarten teachers?

I am wondering if you can tell me how they determine kindergarten classes.

They had my son do an assessment, and then placed him in a class. I am wondering if they place students who are all around the same level in a class, or do they mix it up and have students of different learning abilities?

I taught K...and in our district we never test kids prior to placements.

I believe the ones that do, do it to make sure they have a mixture of kids in a class

Re: any kindergarten teachers?

Okay..I was wondering mainly b/c I was walking the halls of the kindergarten building that houses about 5-6 K classes and looking at the boards of their work. It seemed like some classes, all of the kids were writing their own sentences, while some classes the majority of their work was written by the teacher. So it made me wonder if they were lumping all advanced kids together, or if the teacher was just doing things differently?

Re: any kindergarten teachers?

You should probably ask the school. School districts and sometimes each school has a lot of descretion on how classes are put together. In my school district, they don't test at all so placement is random.

Re: any kindergarten teachers?

We do an initial assessment during registration and place them in a high/med/low group. From there once the year starts we do more testing and then pick out the bottom 15% for the Kindergarten Support room. And then other rooms are ability grouped for reading and math.

as far as the kids writing...it's most likely the teachers way of teaching

Re: any kindergarten teachers?

They didn't do an assessment at my dd's school before they picked the kids for the classes. They did an assessment the week before school started after they had classes already for information purposes. I am glad they don't go by that assessment because dd is shy and totally didn't perform to her abilities during the assessment.

When I was in school (2-8), we were grouped by level. I was in GATE classes. Prior to 2nd grade, I'm pretty sure it was just random as I don't remember any sort of assessment until the end of 1st grade.

My DD2 is in K this year and she didn't do an assessment prior to being placed in her class.
