Do protein shakes help you lose weight..

Or are they just extra calories? Should I use the protein powder or just something like bananas, peanut butter and milk? How are they good for you?

Extra calories and too much sugar. Bananas are full of sugar.

No. Eating whole foods and physical activity daily will help you lose weight. Protein shakes are a supplement, not a meal.

Bananas contain potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and are low in calories. They also have a low glycemic index, which can help with weight loss.

Working out helps you lose weight. The more muscle you build, the faster you burn fat. Quality sources of protein help you build muscle. I guess you could use that logic to say that protein shakes help you lost weight, but you are leaving out a lot.

Like a pp said, a diet of whole foods with low glycemic indexes (and working out - lifting weights more so than cardio) - that will be what helps you lose weight.

These books were valuable resources to me:

Female Body Breakthrough - Rachel Cosgrove
In Defense of Food - Michael Pollan
The South Beach Diet Supercharged - Dr. Arthur Agatston

I never went on the South Beach Diet, but that book does a VERY good job of explaining glycemic index, metabolism, and a true healthy diet. The only thing I don't like is that artificial sweeteners are considered acceptable (ick). There are also some delicious recipes

ETA: bananas are not low on the glycemic index. Pure glucose is 100 and bananas are usually in the 60s. Apples are a better choice as they are less sweet and have quite a bit of fiber. Almonds are also a good high protein and high (healthy) fat snack low in sugar.

Re: Do protein shakes help you lose weight..

ripeness is a consideration. As a banana ripens, the starch is converted to sugar. An under-ripe banana has a GI of 30, while a ripe (all-yellow) banana is rated 51. Anything below 55 is "low".

I just tested (and passed with a 100!) on this unit that was over metabolism (ATP/CP energy pathway, glycolytic pathway & oxidative pathways) in my third personal training certification course

Protein shakes serve their purpose best after hard workouts.

I would use banana, peanut butter and milk before I used any sort of powder or supplement. I eat a fruit before I exercise since I problems with my levels dropping.
