Pro-intact pamphlet?

I had my first visit with my midwife today at a birth center. I was surprised to see on their table of pamphlets a stack of papers with a dr's name and info on for infant circumcisions. No real info on it other than the dr's stuff and that it said it was a "low risk, high benefit procedure." I was actually rather surprised to see it there because IME midwives tend to lean towards the natural, don't-mess-with-it-if-it's-not-a-problem mentality.

I'd like to ask if I can add a pamphlet to their table about the pros of keeping your son intact. Anyone know if something like that is available? (So I don't have to make one myself) I just think they ought to have both sides of the argument represented.

I don't, but I just wanted to say good for you! Why not ask the midwife what it's about? Maybe they don't know about it and would consent to putting it in the round file. It seems a tacit endorsement. Then again, my midwife offered to perform a circumcision if I needed one.

Just remember, theirs is not to judge. My midwife attended my hospital birth and assisted me while they inserted my epidural, without a hint of judgment.

Yeah, midwives are usually really good about this. But after all those circumcision threads, it was surprising to me to hear how many women were not offered any information about circumcision AT ALL except for the consent form they were asked to sign. And I think women need to be make the decision to circ with much more information than that. Not to mention, I totally disagree with the doctor's statement that it's a "low risk, high benefit procedure."

Something like this would be simple and informative.

Those are great! Probably worth paying for and donating them to the clinic.

This makes me sad.

I had my baby at the Austin Birthing Center, and I never saw anything regarding circumcision.

I think if they truly want to educate, the should give both sides.
They just arent informed at all, just towing the company line, which to me seems really odd for a birthing center.

All the "fors" can be debunked anyway.

Re: Pro-intact pamphlet?

Okay, I did it! I just spent $20 on cards and at my next appointment I'll ask if I can put them out. And I'll probably keep a few for myself for friends who are ever curious. I feel so much better! I don't really like the "intactivist" label, but it just eats at me that the only circumcision info available says it's a "low risk, high benefit procedure." Um, it's much, much more complicated than that.

Oh I also found this
http://www.thewholenetwork.org/free-stuff.html

Thanks for speaking up for our baby boys!!

ETA Take a look at the "circ info" in the free section, lots of good info!
People should know the facts.
