DS is not liking Saxon phonics

He's 7, in 1st grade. Reading very well on his own, or with very little help. He basically cries all the way through phonics. I think he's maybe just bored, and saxon requires a lot of time with all the review. Today he wrote "fonix is terabl" still makes me laugh. There are attitude issues, and the fact that we had an extended break, and then moved 6 hours from where we were. I say its time for phonics and he just falls apart.
Should i jump ship and change curricula? try to stick it out and make it work for us? we never seem to get to any of the games because he's so done by the time the lesson is over.... its just frustrating us both. And then theres little sister, shes 3 and just in the middle of everything.
We're doing Saxon math 1 and doing well with it, it physically engages him enough that he's not bored. But phonics.... help?
