Aside from MASSIVE tearing, or horrendous bleeding, why get stitches?

I am curious about this.

I've torn with all 3 of my births, but always declined stitches, and always healed fine w/no issues.

First, was mostly superficial, had some other small tears (at most, 2nd degree). They offered to stitch, I said no thanks.

Second, I had some 2nd degree tearing, and one or two 3rd degree tears, one rather nasty one going upward from my vaginal opening and into my urethra... I declined stitches again. Took longer to heal that time, but still healed fine and normally.

Third, had 2nd degree tearing. Declined stitches.

I've always healed fine. Obviously, my tearing is not as bad as some mamas have. If I had horrible, very bad, super big tearing, or major bleeding, I would likely agree to stitches. But it would have to be REALLY bad - like a REALLY LONG 3rd/4th degree tear, or an episiotomy.

But for anything else, why? What is the purpose? The skin naturally grows back together on its own. And it seems that I read threads about complications with stitches, how bad they hurt, when they dissolve, whether they healed properly, etc., and I can't help but wonder why so many ppl get them?

Do most ppl just not know that they can decline the stitches? Or is there a reason for them that I am missing? Genuinely curious. B/c having a big ole' lidocaine (sp?) shot in my hoo-ha after birth sounds way more painful than a letting a tear heal on its own.

Oh and I suppose I should mention all my parts are in fine working order, despite declining stitches.

I didn't know it was an option! I didn't tear with my first, but I'll definitely keep that in mind for this baby.

The above is painful! I was one of those with massive, extensive tearing and episiotomy. I had a homebirth, but had to go to the doctor to get stitched up because it was too complicated for the midwife to do. It did not feel good!

Is it possible for things to heal wrong and make intimacy uncomfortable? I know even with stitches it was months before things didn't hurt but I guess I'd be afraid of things not lining up right when they heal and being really tight or lumpy.

I'm with ya OP! I tore with both births and did not have stitches.

I think that is possible whether you get stitches or not.

With my worst tearing, I had pain until about 4 wks postpartum, and some dull aching for a while off and on. But nothing major at all.

With all 3 of my previous pregnancies, I resumed regular intimacy as soon as bleeding stopped, 1-2 wks.

Nothing is lumpy or weird looking. LOL Nothing was ever too tight.

It's similar (IMO) to when you tear your skin somewhere else on our body... like between your fingers, it stretches and you tear it or cut it. It still heals, and it works fine and looks fine. IMO it's kind of the same thing. (I'm obviously not at all talking about serious tears, or episiotomies)

In what way? I am not sure I know what that means.

Do you know what degree your tear was? Just curious...
