Thats sad that they think trying to get Mothers to BF is over stepping into personal lives!

Re: Japan news story on breastfeeding

I dont think there is anything intrusive about trying to encourage women to do the best and most natural thing for their babies. I recently learned in a psychology class that babies in Japan dont form good bonds with their moms and I bet this has a lot to do with it. Apparantly their culture puts a lot of emphasis on independence and nursing is a very dependent thing.

I found this troubling also:

"But many opt to have few or no children because of the high cost of raising them and the persisting social expectations for women to quit their jobs after giving birth."

Thats sad that people don't want to have kids because of society's views about mothering.

My husband just sent me a link to this CNN video about companies actually giving money or benefits to families to have MORE children since the birth rate is so low: http://edition.cnn.com/video/partner...yen.babies.cnn

Hope that works. Very interesting how different it is to here.

Just looking at the numbers in the story, I'm surprised that the breastfeeding rate at one month in the US is only 54.7%. Wow. I knew it dropped off significantly by 6 months, but I thought more were sticking with it at least the first month....
