i think my kid has o.d.d.
And my heart is broken :-( I'm calling his pedi today. I'm so sad about how he is turning out and i know this us my fault. I'm a sucky parent. It's sucks to know i failed at something i wanted so badly. Anyone elses kid have this? Is treatment possible? I don't have high hopes. I'm scared for him and for my daughter. he is her hero and does everything he does

No advice for you but sorry you are having to go through this, parenting is hard, and there are times we all feel helpless

Why would you think he has this? Just by googling?

Re: i think my kid has o.d.d.
Don't beat yourself up, if she does have ODD, it's not from parenting. It's just something she has. First off, how old is she? Second off, ODD isn't a standalone diagnosis, it usually comes with something else - ADHD, OCD, etc. treating the underlying disorder helps the ODD, plus therapy. My oldest was diagnosed ADHD and odd, which was later changed to aspergers, ADHD, and anxiety, so I've been down this road, if you need advice. Also, you want a good psychologist, or neuropsychologist, or my son was diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist. Don't trust your pediatricians opinion in this one - you need a specialist!

Re: i think my kid has o.d.d.
I know I sound like a broken record on this idea, but my younger ds was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD over a year ago, but it ended up being dye sensitivities and SPD. We still deal with the SPD, although OT helped drastically, but the "ODD"-type issues only arise when he eats foods with dyes in them. It may very well be OD, but it may be something else.
I know what it's like to feel like it's your fault and even get blamed by other people for his actions. My ds is the same age as yours and I was constantly told by my parents that I just needed to be more consistent in discipline and spank for every instance. We do believe in spanking, but they just didn't get that it doesn't solve all issues. They were very skeptical over what we discovered (or any diagnosis the dr tried to give) until they saw the results. Unfortunately they are the "don't believe in most behavioral diagnosis or medication to treat it" type. Now ds is often my most well behaved and easy going child.

Re: i think my kid has o.d.d.
Have you spoken to his school about having him evaluated?
This has nothing to do with sucky parenting. Do not beat yourself up. |

ODD is a standalone diagnosis. You can have odd and nothing else. Usually there are other issues as well, but not always.
My daughter has it. Diagnosed at 6. She is 15 now. There are many things that help depending on what you want. Meds, therapy, behavioral treatments, holisitic and natural approaches etc. family therapy is a must. Odd can be devastating to a family but with treatment it can be managed. You didnt do anything. It is a medical disorder like any other. Here is the dsm for odd http://www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevision....aspx?rid=106#
